View Full Version : Anyone use Win 147 flat nose?
I was checking out cheaper than dirt and I saw Winchester white box 147 flat nose and was wondering if this load would be better for competion than 115 white box.
Thanks,
John

I've tried the WWB 147 flat nose, as well as similar rounds from Remington, Speer, and Federal. I think the 147 grainers, including WWB, have a slight accuracy edge on 115 grain pointy-nosed stuff. However, different pistols may react differently, so you really need to try a box in your gun. Since the flat nosed rounds normally cost more than the light-weight rounds, you need to decide if there is enough improvement to justify the cost difference.
One thing to be aware of: the 147 grain rounds may shoot to a different point-of-impact than the 115 grain rounds.
Thanks Gary, Looks like its abou a buck more a box. If it moves me up a few notches it will be worth it.

I've not used that particular 147gr. ammo, but I have recently been using a similar one from Remington. My general observation is that the 147gr. recoil exhibits less muzzle flip than 115 or 124gr. rounds that I've used. The 147gr. loads I've come across thus far - both FMJ FN and JHP - are sub-sonic loads and produce more of a straight back, heavy thud, type recoil analogous to what you experience firing a .45 round. As such, it seems easier for me to come back onto target for follow up shots when using 147gr. ammo.
Thus far I have used 147gr. in a G19, S.A. XD9 and Browning HiPower with improvement in my overall accuracy and repeatability shooting this load. Bear in mind that I'm a relatively new target shooter (since Jan.2004), so YMMV significantly!
A minor point is that the FN round leaves a cleaner hole in the target than the round nose bullets. And, FN loads are both more expensive and more scarce. To my dismay I've learned that the Remington rounds I first found have been discontinued, and I'm now researching alternatives.

Tall, if you want to score some of the Remington 147 FN before it disappears, the Sportsman's Guide has it for $85.47/500 (that's the Buyer's Club price; regular price is 5% higher) plus shipping (which is a flat rate, normally based on how much you spend, not weight).
I've had good luck with Federal AE and WWB 147 grainers. SG also sells Federal American eagle 147 FN for $136/1000 plus shipping. WWB 147 FN is $68/500 at Widener's and $76/500 at Midway.
I will soon be trying some Blazer 147. I'll post my reaction.

Gary,
Thanx much for those leads on sources and alternatives! :)

Been shooting the 147gr TCMC WWB ammo. I think it does have a little better accuracy than the round WWB. Groups are usually tighter with my 16" carbine on the bench. It my just be my gun, but I've noticed they shoot a little lower too. I'll post some pics of targets when i get a chance.
