Is it lawful for me to ship antique rifles directly to someone in another state?

A close friend died and left behind a small collection of antique rifles and a civil war sword. I call the rifles antique – they all appear to be well over 100 years old (e.g. Springfield 1863, etc.) but I don’t know what qualifies a rifle as an antique. His wife asked that I help her ship these to family in another state. I’ve constructed a solid shipping crate and checked with a licensed dealer in the area on my question. He said I can ship them directly without going through a dealer. I then checked the ATF website and it appears these types of rifle, if in fact antiques, are exempt from NFA rules and I can ship direct so long as I don’t have reason to believe the family member receiving the package is a felon. But it’s not clear.

About 4 days ago I bought a Iver Johnson 1897 reveolver and it got me digging around a little and found out that if a gun was made before January 1, 1899 it is not classified as a firearm by federal law, it is classified as a antique and you can ship them right to someones door step, However there may be state laws that still classify the gun as being a firearm reguardless of age.

I would go to www.antiqueguns.com you can look up the exact age of a antique gun by using methods such as serial numbers etc. and find out the laws reguarding antique guns.
