As we know, sfc checks Windows Protected Files and replaces any that are corrupt, especially dll.
Now, I'm running XP with sp2 installed. Will running sfc and it replacing dll from the installation disk overwrite any dll changed by the sp2?
Would I need to reinstall sp2 to overwrite the overwrite so the dll are the most current.
Am I making any sense?

yes, if you boot off the cdrom and do a check, it uses the cdrom version as the baseline, so yes, you can do the check/repair, but you'll need to reinstall SP2.

If you have a CD burner - slipstream SP2 into your Windows CD, and reburn it. That way when you SFC, or reinstall, you'll be at SP2 already.

Here is one site that shows how (there are many others) : http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html

I suppose I'll have to download sp2 once again and install, right? Or is threre a sp2 repair/reinstall option somewhere or another already on my system?
FWIW, since sfc'ing my system seems to have pepped up.

SP2 Download : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Or you can pick up an SP2 CD at a Best Buy / CompUSA for free.

sfc is a little utility with Windows that will scan your system files and replace them with the original if it is found to be a different version.
