Does the USP have a universal rail or does the rail only fit the HK light?

I have no stinking idea. I don't intend on hanging anything off my pistol, so I haven't looked at it closely.

I would say not universal.

I just got a really nice SureFire light for
my HK USP .45.
I was much surprised to find an attachment
adapter was needed(it was included) to fit the light!!!!

GG&G makes a rail adapter so you can use most picantinny designed items. The UTL is the only light that fits on the USP without an adapter that I know of, hardly universal.

The thing you have to remember is that the USP was one of if not the first handgun to use a rail system. In those days, the pictany rail that we pretty much consider the standard rail today wasn't really any sort of standard when it came to handguns and it's just a matter of fate that the USP rail didn't catch on like the picantinny rail did. Sort of like VHS vs. Beta or 8-tracks versus cassettes. Myself, I just prefer to use a Streamlight M-2 UTL that works with the USP rail rather than go with the adaptor. I think the adaptor makes it a little more bulky while the UTL was designed for this handgun and rail system from the begining.

The USP rail is Universal, as long as the Universe is exclusively manufactured by Heckler and Koch or Knights Armament.

The rail is not universal. I went with the M2. ZNot as easy on/off as a Glock but it is OK.
