Linux question on sound

I am using a onboard Via chipset sound and I am having a problem with low volume. I'm wondering if I am missing something in Mandrake. Any ideas

With Debian, the sound defaults to mute on the first startup; it also does this with Kanotix and most LiveCD distros.

Click open the little speaker near the clock and make sure the volume is up, then look for a mixer app; it might be turned down low there, as well.

Other than that, check to see which driver is doing the work...wether it is ALSA or one of the other types.
