I've got a couple late model Compaq and HP desktops running XP and an older Compaq Laptop running ME.

I have several external/portable hard drives formated NTFS.

Due to it's age and cost of buying XP I can't run XP on the Laptop.

I've used an external HD with the Laptop in the past but I think it was formatted FAT 32.

Now the (ME) Laptop won't run the ext HD (NTFS).

Question,
I know XP will work with ME but will ME not work with NTFS?

If not, I guess I could format one of the ext HD as FAT 32.

ME needs FAT32.

You can technically run XP on FAT32, but it isn't a good idea. NTFS is more stable and secure, and faster when transferring large files. A Win9x OS cannot read or write to NTFS due to its differences in file name length and other architectural improvements.

You'll need to reformat one of the HDD's to fAT32 for your ME machine to be able to use it.

Thanks fastvfr.

I was pretty sure that was the problem but I wanted to make sure before I formatted one of the drives to FAT32.
