View Full Version : S+W 1911 Owners- Please Read!
I have a new S+W1911 that I just picked up. I fired a few and looked at the casings. There are dents in all of them. See photo here:

The base of the brass on the opposite side of the dent has a small "flattened" area also.
Does your 1911 do this? I called S+W, emailed them the photo, and they said it had to do with the ejector and extractor. They were going to talk to the guys in their PC tomorrow morning.
I would like to know if this is "normal" before I call them. Should I ask for replacement of the weapon? Will taht cure the problem? Or do all 1911's have this issue to some extent? Can I safely reload these casings? Many thanks for any information you can give me before I call them in the morning.

I don't know about S&W1911s, but regular M1911s don't do that.
Mine does not do that. It looks like the case is slamming against the extractor when it is ejected. S&W has good customer support and they will take care of it for you. Buy the way, what brand were you shooting?
Zoggy, combination of WWB, Federal, and reloads.
You sure this isn't a cheap gun like a Kel-Tec or Hi-point because they are the only ones that are junk out of the box and need to go back the nice repair people;Q
;z I love to flame the expensive gun guys
Nope, brand new S+W 1911.

I've had mine awhile, it doesn't do that.
My dad's S&W1911 gun does this. He was on the range to my left and I was getting pelted with his brass. I picked one up and it was like that. We started looking at the others and they were the same. It seems to be working ok, so he hasn't been too worried about it yet.
I have a S&W 1911 and mine does not damage the cases.
With just looking at the pics and applying my limited mental powers I get the mental image of the casings slamming against the underside of the slide as it chambers a new round. It's a pretty definite dent; not random among the casings but uniform.
Check and see if the first fired round has a dent in it as well.
If it does, so much for my theory.

No, my SW1911 doesn't do that.
I don't have a S&W 1911, but no pistol should do that.
Send it back to S&W for warranty repair.
I would guess that your extractor is holding on to the cases a bit too long and they are getting hit by the slide during their ejection. Since it's an external extractor, you may have to let S&W do the adjusting.
The problems were several:
1. The extractor was too tight causing the casing to rotate too quickly, thereby hitting the side of the ejection port and causing the dents.
2. There was a defect in the original barrel.
S+W gave me a new barrel, a new slide, and tuned the extractor properly and everything is right with the world.
S+W really does stand behind their product.

That's good news gerleb. I have a new S&W 1911 Target Model that I just love. It's a great shooter and I had to send mine back to S&W so they could adjust the grip safety and the trigger pull which were working against each other. They did a great job for me!
