View Full Version : BIG problem with my night sites!
Hello.
I just got back from the range, and as I was cleaning my G19, I noticed that my front Mepro night site was loose, very loose, and it looks like it is going to come off sometime soon.
Before I took it to the range I noticed that it was slightly loose, and moved a little when you moved it side to side with your finger.
Now it looks like it is going to fall off. The back site is fine though.
What can I do to fix this? I have no idea how they go on, becuase they were installed when I bought it, and I have no idea how to fix them.
Thank you for your time!

Remove it and add a little Red Loctite and reinstall

I would try blue loctite first. Red is really permanent.
Make sure parts are really clean, and really shake the bottle.
Sorry, but I have no idea what you guys are talking about?
Is this something I can buy at a gunstore? The gun came with the sites and nothing else so if it came with the sites I didnt get it.
How much would they cost, and how do I install them?
Thanks again!
EDIT: after reading the name a little more carefully, im assuming its a glue now.
Where can I find it? Becuase you said the blue isnt permanant, would I risk the site become loose again?
Also, is the about to fall off, or is it just loose (so that it wont fall off).
I looked under the slide and noticed it is held on by a pentagonal screw. Will this hold it forever, and the glue just hold it still?
Thanks!
Also, does it have to be loctite or can it be any glue?
Thanks!
The Loctite seals the threads of the screw so it won't some loose. For those recommending blue loctite for the front sight (as Walter used to say) Brownells has replacement front sights available. Use red loctite (#242 I think) for the front sight screw - you will also need a thin walled 3/16" socket.
EDIT : used the wrong version of site/sight. Thanks for the Loctite # correction Walter.

Just unscrew the screw and thoroughly degrease it. Use red (271) Loctite on the screw's threads only...just a small drop. Snug up with a driver. Let cure for 24 hrs. before firing. 242 is blue Loctite and isn't the preferred Loctite for Glock front sight installations.
271 Loctite isn't "permanent"; just stronger than 242 (blue) Loctite. I frequently test front sights and install and remove them all the time, using 271 Loctite. Never even had to apply heat to remove.
The discussion about Loctite presumes that your front sight is held on by a nut on the inside surface of the slide. If that is true, then the advice is correct- get the proper nut driver, remove and degrease both parts, install using the Loctite of your choice.
On the other hand, it seems that some Meprolites were installed by Glock in Smyrna, and their front sight is usually held in place by being crimped or rivited on the inside surface- the nut was not used. If that's your situation, you might be able to re-rivit the protruding piece. A better solution would be to have a gunsmith take a look at it, if he can't fit it then you would need to buy a new front sight.

Jim, I learned a long time ago not to assume anything about how Glocks' front sights might be installed. I took his word for it that he eyeballed a hex-head (he called it "penta", I believe) screw. :)
I could have sworn it had 5 sides, but maybe it did have 6. I dont remember though.
Well, I remembered a friend had left some "glue" in my refridgerater several months ago, and I checked to see what it was. It was indeed loktite, and I applied a drop to my front site, right under the site (becuase you could actually lift it up off the slide).
Does anyone know if there is anyway to take this off? I want to get my slide refinshed by Glock sometime soon, and from what ive heard they take of the sites to do it.
Thanks!
