Seems like every time I buy a vid card or a MOBO, I get a copy of WinDVD 4, which is a pretty good software solution for playing movies.

I don't know if it can be found for free online, but since everyone seems to be giving it away, you could try Amazon or the Wally World bargain rack....should be well under $10.

Heck, even WinAmp 5 is better than WMP!!

You need the MPEG-2 filters and normally this isn't free. The software normally comes with the DVD drives. There are trial/demo versions that work for 30 days.I have found by going through updates or software download sites of certain companies that some have this software available.I think I found an old version on HP's website as a WinDVD update.A software company in Japan used to have Sony's updates and downloads but I think they've switched software now.

There's not much point in using an expensive PC to watch movies.DVD players are cheap and it's more enjoyable to watch movies on a big screen TV.I can't see loading up movie software with my more important things on my PC.

I have found that my laptop is a bit more portable than my home theater system. :)

Portable DVD players are much cheaper than laptop PC's.There are plenty of things that can be done with PC's but for the cost you can get some better entertainment devices.

I understand your point DC. However, currently in my car I have a radar detector, scanner, XM Radio, GPS, laptop, the last thing I need is another device. At this point I am trying to consolidate not add another device.

Off subject.

I watch many movies on my computer with windows Xp.
Windows media player won't let me adjust any color or brightness settings.

Can anyone solve this problem? Thanks

I prefer to use my wireless media hub to send my pics, music and video from the pc upstairs to the tv and stereo downstairs while I am shopping for a new ent. center and do not have a dvd player. Why buy one for 60 bux when my surround ent. center comes with a 6 disk?

Download mpg2w11b.zip from here http://www.mpeg2.de/video/software/ This should be enough to view DVD movies with Windows Media Player 10 without paid software such as WinDVD or PowerDVD.

Guys, go to jetaudio.com. They're up to version 6 now I believe. It kind of looks like winamp and all the stuff winamp does for music plus it burns and plays dvds. Best of all it's free.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

You can then play DVDs and just about any other media in the old Media Player Classic application. Secure, lightweight, free and nag-free.

Then you can download the Real and Quicktime Alternatives as well.

Geez, with all that, when do you ever find time to drive?

;z ;z Oddly enough it is easier than you think. The radar detector, scanner and XM Radio are all audio devices. Scanner and radar detector only go off peridically so you just listen for them with no actual attention given to them. The XM Radio is set to a channel I want to listen to and it just sits there and does it's thing. The GPS unit is really for data collection. I know where I am at on a road. It feeds data into a program on the laptop. That is all set up and running before I start driving.

I have a remote antenna for me GPS so when it gets turned on it get's thrown in a cubby hole in my console so that I am not tempted to look at it while I drive. The lid on the laptop gets closed for the same reason.

It's realy not as much distraction as it initally sounds. Less distraction than the guy passing me and shaving at the same time.
