I need to upgrade the ram in my son's Gateway computer. It's an older 733mhz pentium III machine, purchased I think back in 2000. It currently has 256mb memory and is running win98se, used mostly for online gaming.

I just busted the case open and found the following. Three slots for ram, two are occupied, the third one empty. Slot one has what I think was the original 128mb Infinion labeled SDRAM PCI 133-333-520.

The second slot has a Kingston KGW3400/128 card.

For some reason I have it in my mind that he can only go to 512mb max on this machine... don't remember why that is???

What is the best method to upgrade the memory to the max allowable? What size modules do I need? Could I purchase a 256mb module and stick it in the open third slot for a total of 512, or do I have to have a different combination of modules?

Is there a specific kind that is required - SDRAM? Where should I buy it?

Thanks
Wayne

Is this what I want? Kingston Technology KGW3400/256 256MB SDRAM PC133. $127

Can I just plug this into the empty third slot and have the system recognize 512 total ram?

Thanks
Wayne

Go to Viking's (or another memory maker) website and use their memory finder. Then do a search on google for that part number. Newegg may even have it. If they do, it will probably be much cheaper than buying direct from Gateway. What's the computer's model number?

All the invoice says is it was a reman 733 pentium 3 machine shipped in 2001, don't see any model type on the case.

Try this!! It'll give you the goods on every component in that rig, and even let you Benchmark most of them. (http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=1)
