I spent about 8 years sitting on my butt, getting out of shape, and gaining weight.

Three years ago, I bought a Bowflex, and got serious about getting in shape. Over a 6 month period, I dropped 50 pounds, and was in the best shape of my life. I was proud that I actually kept it off till this year.

Earlier this year, I started having heart problems...irregular heartbeat, chest pains, etc. The Duke docs have put me through every test known to them (ultrasound, EKG, Stress Test, Holter Monitor, Heart Card, etc.) and came back with "well, we don't know what it is, but we know it won't kill you." So, I still have the irregular heartbeat (radically so) and the chest pain. They put me on a beta blocker, and an aspirin a day, and sent me down the road.

Here's my problem. The medications have done a really good job of slowing down my heartrate...and they have slowed down everything else too. In fact, my metabolism went through the floor. So...I've gained about 30 of those 50 pounds back...and seem to be going strong.

Exercise causes wobbliness and chest pain. Dieting makes me so weak I shake all over. I did not experience either of these issues when I went on my crusade a few years back.

I'm furious with myself, humiliated at the weight gain, and I feel terrible.

Any suggestions?

Walking is a great way to lose weight w/o severe exertion.

See if any of this stuff makes sense for what you want to do. There is a lot of free data here too. http://www.mattfurey.com

Sorry to hear about that, Baldy.

The doctors' treatment doesn't sound
like it will work for you too much longer.

Can you get a 2nd or 3rd opinion?

Have they ruled out stress and/or diet?

I hope you find what's causing it soon.

Stress? Well, that is about all they came up with. I'm the executive director for a large retirement community...in other words, I spend my days trying to keep 530 senior adults happy... :-) No stress there.

Actually, the docs have attributed all of this to stress. They seem to approve of my diet.

Second, third, fourth, opinions have all pretty much been the same. "We don't know what is causing it, but it won't kill you."

It is an irritating comfort! :-)

Do you drink alot of coffee or caffeinated soda?
Caffeine can cause irregular heart beats.
Also, caffeine is no good when trying to lose weight.

Again, good luck in your search.
I'll bet you stumble on the answer to your problem all by yourself. ;)

This may have nothing to do with your particular situation, but do you/did you cardio, and or do a physical job? And try to eat healthy? If so, too little salt can give you palpitations. Usually this is accompanied by cramping, but sometimes not. Just somthing to look into as you didn't mention getting blood work done which would show such an imbalence.

editing to add...

Cafine can boost fat burn in endurence activities, I try and get at least 25 mg of cafine about 15 minutes before I head out on a long run or for martial arts class. Most energy gels contain caffine, and some sports drinks do too.

For three years, I did a ton of cardio and weight work...with great success. The heart thing kinda knocked the soup out of me where the cardio was concerned: I am, however, working my way back into it.

They did a full blood work up, with no particular problems found.

In response to Pizzaguy, I was guilty as charged. Lots of iced tea and diet drinks. That has been tapered off considerably, as my doctor growled about that.

While I've not seen any progress whatsoever on the weight, and the irregular heart rate has not really changed, I do feel better since I've gotten started back with the exercise.

Did the doc's ever say anything about atrial fibrilation?

caffiene? soda, tea, coffee, cooked food, processed food, if its out of a can, or box, it will kill you just as dead as fast food.
Do you smoke, dip, chew tobacco?
How about the booze?

I did it all and for a bunch of years. I quit. All of it, and all at one time. The day I got out of the hospital. I had the atrial fibrilation and the doc's couldn't tell why. They had me on tambacore, cartizem, fleccinide, did every test. and the only thing they could come up with was an invasive, new, and dangerous procedure called a catheter ablation. Which if it works it works well and if it does not? its pace maker time. Well to make a long story short I just changed the way i lived, eat, and sleep. I lost 50 lbs in two months just by switching to raw foods.
Do you own a juicer?
