I used to own a G-17 back in 1989. I sold it when my Dept. went Sig.^2
I find the 2 & 3rd Gen to be blocky. Anyone prefer the 1st gen and why. Any pics would be great.
Thanks,
Don

I still have a 1st Gen. I like it ALOT ;f ;a ;f
I have added a Hogue grip to thicken it up some due to my larger hands, and I don't like the new grip on the newer generations as much, but it still is a Glock.
I shot my sisters 3rd G22 and I noticed some of the minor differances, but I would buy one. I am considering going to a new Dept and they buy you a gun of your choice.
I am seriously considering sticking with my G17 and getting a G26 as my backup.

Overall, I prefer the 2nd-gen frame; the 1st-gens are just a little too "slippery" in my hands, and I can't stand the finger-grooves on the 3rd-gens, but everything comes together for me in the 2nd-gens.

2nd Gen is the best grip
I've always thought that the 1st gen frames felt smaller or thinner and I liked that but otherwise prefer the 3rd gen frame, for the light rail. I don;t really care one way or the other about the figner grooves.

To me, the 2nd gen is the best.

Custom Les Baer 1911? ;f
I like mine :) I'm issued a 3rd gen 22 though. I'd love to dremmel the FGs off, but I don't think my boss would understand ;f

The 1st Gen Glock 17 is probably on of my favorite pistols. I would like to find one that isnt beat up when i get back home. I just like the way they feel in my hand. So does anyone have a 1st Gen with the NDF mags, they want to sell? Naw im only jk, but I really do like em.

I vote for the 2nd-gen frame, with three-letter S/N prefix. I just bought a new "FG/Rail" G17, and hate the thumb rests (I grip thumbs-down; the edge of the thumbrest pushes against my right thumb). I like the tactical rail and Glock light, though! I carry my 2nd-gen, 3 letter S/N on duty. I use the LWD slip-on grip.
I've never seen a first-gen for sale locally that wasn't beat-to-hell. I'm in the market for one that is a newly factory rebuilt. My biggest concern with buying a first-gen would be the necessity to replace obsolete components, and other first-gen concerns ("pencil barrels", loose trigger housings, old-style extractor, etc).
For those that prefer the first-gen, a question: If you use a slip-on grip, does it install more easily than on a second-gen frame? I'm wondering if the first-gen frame texture makes it an easier task. If so, that alone would be a reason for me to seek out a first-gen.

I shoot my 1st gen g-17 as much as any of the
glocks i own. this is a 88 model that has been there,
done that.Other than routine cleanings,i've done nothing special with it.I have replaced a few recoil, trigger springs but that's about it.
A great gun that has delivered what other's promise.
Well, I guess that since my first and only Glock is a 1st Gen G17, I am a little biased. I got the pistol at a super good price, and added things like XS sights, NDF and drop free mags. It shoots very well, and I use it in 3 Gun Matches. Transitioning to the G17 was a little time consuming, but the pistol was patient and I have learned to shoot it with confidence. My hands are a little big for the 3rd Gen pistols, hitting the finger grooves, and I kind of like the smooth grips of the 1st Gen. Guess I am hooked.
I prefer the 1st gen. grip style. I hate the grenade checkering. Wish they still used that style. Stippling?
My first Glock is a G17 first gen bought NIB back in 1988. It still shoots just like it did the first time at the range and it is still all original (no part replacements or upgrades). Thr first gen grip feels a lot slimmer to me compared to the second and third gen frames (maybe it's psychological). FWIW, I'm proud to own a piece of history: The Glock that started it all (First gen G17)!
The best feeling Glock I have is a gen 1 22. Fits the hand much more comfortably and looks better too.
I shoot my first-generation G17 better than any other Glock I own, but couldn't say why. My guess is that the ergonomics of the first generation were just different enough to fit me better. Shooting the later Glocks has been more of a challenge.
BTW, this G17 is an ex-police refurb marked MPDC. It was made in 1989 and is in near-new condition, though it does have the upgrades. My only problem with it is that I used to own two G17s just like it, and foolishly traded the other one away.

Sorry, but no such thing. Only 17s and a very, very few 19s. I'd like to see a 1st Gen 19.
have not shot a 1st gen, but like the 2nd better than the 3rd...can't match up to the finger grooves.

That is the only one I have not owned so far. Recently there were 2 on Gunbroker.com in mint cond for around 380. I've always wanted on. I mainly shoot my G21 in 45 or G20 in 10mm but have always wanted to know what officers thought about the 9mm as a duty gun. I always felt that it was to light in stopping power but have recently run across 2 sherrif's that are on SWAt and they both carry the 17. They say with the right ammo it is as good as anything else. Any comments

With "+P" or "+P+" duty ammunition, the 9mm can do anything the .40SW or .357SiG can. Especially when fired from the G17's 4.5" barrel. 9mm is what Glock does best.
I've finally located a First-Gen G17; it should be on it's way here shortly.

If you can find a distributor in your area to sell you Winchesters Ranger 9mm+P+ get some. This stuff is really hot with less recoil than the 40 S&W but a 127grn HP at 1250 with 449 Ft Lbs. at the muzzel. It runs about $19.00 a box of 50 here.

I like 1st gen best BC 02X
My first gun was a first-gen (refurb) G17. I did not care for the grip-- something about it made it fit poorly in my hand, with the "hump" being especially annoying. The second-gen felt much better in my hand right off the bet when I tried it years ago. I don't know why that would be, but that was how it was for me.
My current G17 (I have had a number of them-- don't ask me why I keep selling them) is a third-gen with the lower groove (ridge) removed. I like it (it has a superb frame/slide fit), but I do overall prefer the second-gen... if they had those with the accessory rail, that'd be perfect.
Hey Glock: One size does not fit all. The stock third-gen G17 is perfect for someone with a skinny ring finger and a pinkie as fat as a thumb-- look how far the second ridge is from the bottom of the frontstrap. If they put the second ridge a quarter of an inch lower, it would be perfect for me. But, then, the people with tiny hands would have the same problem that I do now.

I bought my 1st Generation in March 1987. I've always liked the "pebble" grip finish a lot better that the newer (2nd and 3rd Gen.) checkering. I've shot a lot of rounds through it, from +P+ to my own lead reloads, and its always worked like it as supposed to. Its sort of semi retired right now, at least until I get the bug to play with it again.

It's the only Glock that I would bother to own. I hate the stupid finger grooves of the latter generations that don't fit people's hands.
The second generation doesn't have grooves.

I still search for a 1st Generation M17.
This is my box-stock 1st generation G17 that I got brand new in April 1986. Much better than the finger grooved frames of the current models in my opinion.

lol, Yeah, I have "a number" of them.......
I'm still trying to confirm that the plated one on the left came that way. The slide, trigger pin, slide stop lever, and slide lock lever appear Nickle plated.

AFAIK, any chrome or nickel plated slides are aftermarket jobs as Glock only produces them black.

yes, that was my understanding as well..... this is the only plated Gen 1 i've seen (but some claim Glock did a few in nickle), it also has the maritime/underwater, spring cups.
I've also been told that they all came over with plastic sights, then some were replaced with Meps, or Trijions. I have early 17's with both (i think they were both used....anyone have any insight re that?)

I was told by a Glock Armoror that the 3rd generation Glock, although very reliable, suffer from accuracy problems at 25 yrds.
He recommended purchasing an old Glock 17 over the newer one.

I own a 1988 1st gen, all I have ever done to it is change the sights from factory to Amri glo ghost-rings. It will digest any t hing I stuff in it flawlessly
I own close to 25 handguns it is the fist I bought han by far my baby . I always put it on the back burner when a gun hits the safe but with in a week it isback in its proper place.
I love the grips being that I have small hands, but as other have said the "dimpling" wears after a few years and does tend to get smooth.

Spieler and myglockisa23 are to be commended for the condition of their 1st gen Glocks. Nice pics. ( sorry if I missed anybody from page one ) Anyway, I have not shot a first generation, but would probably choose it over the third gen., because of the lack of finger grooves that match my hands. My only reference point is from firing a 2nd Gen ( no grooves ) very comfortably. Take care, rob
p.s. What I mean by "comfortably" is that; when I was shooting ( from about thirty feet away, indoors ) I made what I thought were three really nice shots at the center of the target. I was using a used G17. On the next shot, I saw a piece of paper fall out of the middle and when I returned the target, noticed that their was a perfect four leaf clover. I don't think I did it with consecutive shots, but it was cool the way those four rounds matched up.

Good looking pistol you have there, Spieler.
I purchased a 1st Gen G17 at a gun show a couple months back. AHXXX. I like how it feels compared to my G19 and G26. My G19 was a 2nd Gen, but it was stolen years ago. I recovered it, however, the turds tried to grind off the serial number plate. Glock replaced my frame for $50, but I had to turn the old frame into the ATF. I got a Gen 3 replacement. I'm trying to find a Gen 2 G19 now.

I just traded a like new Gen 3 19 for a Gen 1 17 with Heinie sights on it, in great shape. This is a BC serial number, which appears to have been imported in December of '86. I love this pistol already, although I will eventually get another 19.
The 1st and 2nd gen frames fit me better than the finger groove frames.

+1 about the Gen-1 and Gen-2 frames being a better hand-fit. It's actually the thumb rests that bother me on the Gen-3. My thumbs want to go where they want to go. Period. I still haven't found that elusive Gen-1 for my collection. It's just as well; I'm kinda Glock-heavy right now.

1st gen 17 on Gunbroker with manual...very good condition and looks like an "A" prefix gun
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=65191938
i have an '86. it has an AR prefix. it shoots just fine, but cant hit the broad side of the barn. glock said it is just fine when i sent it back to update it. i also own a 24c. now that gun is a tack driver. at 25 yards on a paperplate, i can hit the mashed potatoes or the meat loaf. i refuse to think that a couple of inches on the 24 is the complete reason i shoot better with it.

I got my old Gen-1 in 1988 or so. I qualified with it in a revolver/Sig P226 heavy Dept(plenty-o-Glock-hate). Our quals back then consisted of a tough course with targets that angled away in just 2 seconds. Most targets looked like swiss cheese with bullet holes covering the man sized target. My G-17 target was just a coffee can sized area of holes. The RO who hated Glocks HAD to try my G-17. :animlol:
Got my first in 1986.
