I have about 500 rounds through my 239. I just discovered a chip on the frames slide rail. It's 1" from the front on the left side. It's silver in color vs the blued frame. The underrail is discolored for about 1/4". Small clip visible on the left side of rail and its rough to the touch. Is this normal wear? Anything to worry about?

I own only one SIG and have seen no wear like you describe, it certainly doesn't sound normal. Got pics?

Have you tried posting this question at http://sigforum.com/ ? I can't help but think you'd find more experience to better answer your question there.

Sorry no pics. I'm technologically challenged. It's a very small chip about the size of a sesame seed and like a deep scratch on the under side of the rail. I had trouble logging on to Sig forum. It kept telling me it had to verify my email and I couldn't post.

Thank you for your response.

It's normal. The stainless slides are hard on the alloy frames. The wear will stop at a certain point.

What kind of lube are you using? I've noticed almost "0" wear with the SIG recommended TW25B lube.

Is that the Mil-Comm that Sig is providing a sample of with some of the new guns?

I have only cleaned a few times, new firearm. I use Militec-1 Weapons grade synthetic based metal conditioner.

TW25B is made by Mil-Comm. It stays on a lot better than Militech.

I have a new 229 9mm with about 250 rounds through it and a 5 yr. old 239 with 1,000 or so. The new 229 shows far more wear than the 239. The 239 has 1 pinpoint on the frame rails that shows wear, the 229 frame rails show wear on the top and inside the grooves on the sides. The 239 barrel only shows wear just back from the muzzle, the 229 finish is worn pretty much the whole length of recoil. I've heard the newer Sigs are much tighter and therefore there is more initial wear, but have not had this confirmed. Anyone?

My .357 P239 cut the same divot in the same place you describe. It stopped and smoothed out, no problems since. I think is is sort of like the peening you see on glock slides. Not harmful wear, but disturbing to see. I may have contributed with inadequate lubrication in the early years of the gun.

Like RAH, I also would recommend a good teflon based grease like TW25B or Tetra for the rails on these guns. Stays put and easy to clean up.

look like this.....i just bought my 239 a few days ago and outside of these marks and normal wear on the outside of the chamber it is brand new. i'm kind of curious about them too...i'm assuming it's normal wear but you never know.

edited...pic looks a lot worse than it is, just cleaned the thing about 10 minutes ago and the rails on the slide are fresh with lube, lots of glare.

Mwildt,

I hope you don't mind but I cropped the pic for the dialup users.:)

Thank you all for your responses. The posted picture looks worse than the wear I'm describing. It's good to know that others have seen the same wear and that it's no big deal.

I don't really see much wear on top of my rails at all on any of my sigs. It looks like the slide and barrel are pretty dry in the photos... { may be the picture } . I would make sure that there is no rough spot that needs to be lightly stoned or filed.. and keep plenty of lube on the sides and top of the rail. A light synthetic gun grease might be a good idea.. Sigs like oil and my oil of choice is mobil-1 15 w 50 . If you are letting the gun run pretty dry I would suggest trying some mobil-1 instead. I don't think you will have any long term issues with the slide or receiver based on what I see... maybe post a picture after cleaning. Your camera likely has a close up mode you might want to try as well.

I have a pair of sig 239's in 357 sig.. and agree that lack of lube might be the issue. My sigs have no such divots... although I have few rounds through the pistols...

 I have two P239's and they have some rounds throught them. The one in 357sig is very tight still, and I have a 40cal barrel that I have used from time to time. It still is quite tight. The fit that is. I have'nt noticed any wear like yours. The one in 9mm is loser slide to frame. The frame was made in Germany. I have shot mostly "Hot" NATO Rounds made by Winchester. Both Pistols do show some wear there, but it is smooth, more like the the bluing has been worn off. Both pistols work excellent. between the two of them only the 9mm has had, a failure to fire, and that was some cheap 115gr FMJ I got on sale. I don't even remember the Brand. Anyway I like the Hot ammo better, and this pistol thrives on it! I think most people are getting some type of rail wear from what I have read here. I would'nt be to concerned, unless it continues to get progressivly worse. Have fun & stay safe!;f

This is the wear on my P-220. I bought the gun used two years ago and have put a few thousand rounds through it since then. There has been no change in the wear.

Have no idea what the previous owner used for lube, but I use RemOil with Teflon on all my handguns and they fire and function 100%.
