View Full Version : Sight Options For A *Non-Novak* Cut Slide
Hello,
I have some Springfield Champion .45s which are of "mil-spec" configuration and therefore do not have any dovetail cut into the slide. If I'm correct, both sights are staked in.
I would like to test an adjustable target sight set on one pistol. Does anyone make such a thing that doesn't require a Novak cut or other similar dovetail?
Thank you for any info.

MMC used to, but I don't know if they still do.
I'd suggest searching the online Brownells catalog. They've got the biggest selection of that sort of stuff west of the Pecos.

I'm not sure if it still uses the GI notch, but for a GI-type combat rear sight it's really pretty. (Click on the image to go the site.)

Do not have ANY dovetail cut into the slide?
Please take another look at the rear sight. That is known as the GI dovetail. Brownells sells a line of Italian adjustable sights that will fit the GI dovetail. One version is low enough to use the GI front sight. Others require taller fronts, which ARE staked in. Staking in a front sight takes the special offset punch, solid support, and some knowhow. I prefer to let the 'smith do mine.
But there is no reason to pay a hundred bucks for an odd size dovetail to get a better rear sight on a gun.
Novak has a very nice replacement rear sight that fits the GI dovetail.

This is what it looks like installed.

Yes, I have one of those on a gun. My FLG calls it the "Junebug sight" because it looks like a bug perching on top of the slide. But it doesn't require the heavy milling of a Lo-mount.
It's not adjustable, though, which is what Anon says he wants.

Missed that part.
Not adjustable but you may want to look at the new Chip McCormick sight. It has a piece that fits in the GI dovetail and then a cap goes over it that is the sight itself. Matches to the slide very well.
From CMC website:
"Drop-In" Installation - Anyone Can Do it. The first ever, a low mount rear sight that is completely "Drop-In". Save $50 to $100 on the machining costs required for mounting other types of low mount sight. Fits any 1911 slide with a standard military type dovetail sight cut (60 x .290"). No machining, just knock out the old blade sight and install the new "Drop-In" rear sight. This innovative sight completely encloses the dovetail cut, yielding the most blended custom appearance obtainable with a combat/carry type, high visibility, low mount sight.

The Italian sights Jim mentioned are LPA. They sit on top of the slide so if you have a GI type front sight, it might be too low. You can get them at Precision Sights here in the US.

Ted Yost makes an awesome "GI Retro" sight. It has a fantastic sight picture and is great for a "simple" gun. That's what I would go with.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'll be checking them out and then hopefully getting some and seeing what works for me.
