View Full Version : Basic colt or SA mil. spec
Hey guys I am new to the 1911 world, and having said this I have a few questions. I have read a lot about 1911's and I want to start with a good base pistol that I can later build. Which one of these models would be best for me? I'm in no way rich so I want a gun that will shoot well stock. I really like the SA mil. spec, but I have not read a lot about the colt. My only requirements are that the pistol have a lowered ejection port and will pop everytime I pull the trigger. So "masters on the 1911" what do you think?
Thanks in advance.
Both are very nice pistols, but I believe you get more bang for your buck with the SA milspec. I have three and all shoot very accurately and are reliable as the day is long. I've also had three of the new Colt 1991's and ended up selling all three in favor of the SA milspecs. If you leave them bone stock the Colt will have a higher resale, but you're gonna pay more for it in the first place. The SA doesn't have the firing pin safety like the Colt which I also like better. Both pistols lend themselves very well to customizing and you can literally spend as much as you want on either. I'm sure you'll get varying opinions on both...........

Either the Colt or SA milspec should serve you well. If there is a problem with either the company will fix it for you. The Colt will appeal to some and may have a higher resale later down the road. The prce of Colts has recently gone up, so if that is what you want look quick.
As stated, the SA will not have the firing pin safety, but it does have the lock built into the mainspring housing. This is easily changed, the instructions are in the manuel.
As for shooting, they should be close and if you close your eyes you won't see the difference ;f

i've had 3 colts. they were awesome guns, but with the recent price increases at colt, i think you'll find a better deal in the springfield.
