View Full Version : Talk me out of a Serbu?

Gang,

I've been "doing my homework", and am leaning towards a Serbu - anybody got any reason not to go that route, or a really convincing argument how/why something else would be preferable?

My reasoning is that I would rather get a "top to bottom" 50BMG rather than just an upper for an AR, and the Serbu scored very highly (a "Best Buy") when evaluated by Gun-Tests (I'm a subscriber).

Discuss! ;f

P.S. - Almost ready to get my "Club Number" - who's got the "Club Numbers"? :)

I own a AR-50 and a Serbu "universal" receiver, I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do with it. Not sure if I want a standard, carbine, mag-fed or semi (he's still working on it).

I also have a lower receiver that I need to decide on also, might go with the UltraMag50. Either that or the ALS upper as they are super accurate.

Nope, can't see talking you out of one.;f

No body here is going to talk anyone out of buying a 50 of any kind. Get one and have the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Personally, I have a Barrett M-99 and love it but to each his own. Good luck with whatever you buy.

i have an under 20 serial # serbu, love it, they are fun shooters and won't even embarass you in a match - but they are best with fun stuff like spotter/tracers-api-etc

reloading for them is fun too

I won't talk you out of a Serbu either. I currently have a Serbu BFG-50 and love it. Yes, it's a single shot but I do believe Serbu is coming out with a semi auto as well. The price of the Serbu is less then most other complete 50 cals and I've never had any problems with it. As to accuracy, I've taken out coffee cans at 600 yards. Not sure what the MOA of that would be, but for me that's damn accurate enough!!;f

Well boys, you did such a poor job of talking me out of it... that rifle's on the way! ;f

Who hands out the club numbers?

Only downside is I frequent quite a few forums on GT and now have to add this one to my daily check-in schedule.

So be on the lookout for posts from me about "where's good deals on ammo?", and since I'm an avid re-loader I'm sure I'll be posting/reading about getting that going.

Ain't it great to have a new toy?! ~2 ^5

Congrats on the new purchase. You will not be dissapointed!

I'm new to this board, but I see there is a lot of experience here with all types of firearms. When I had questions about my 50 BMG I was directed to Biggerhammer.net from some 50 cal shooters on another board. They have a primitive forum over their but a wealth of 50 BMG knowledge. The gentleman that owns Serbu hangs there a lot and answered some questions from me. Give it a try if you don't find what your looking for here.

Your club number is your serial number.

Ammoman.com has all flavors of .50 BMG, if your state allows them I suggest picking up a can of the sampler pack. Bluetip, Spotter/Tracer and ball ammo all in one can, FREE shipping to boot.

The sportsmansguide normally has great deals on .50 cal ammo. Just to let you know the spotter rounds are balistically matched to a 106mm recoilless rifle and don't shoot as flat as normal 50 rounds. for plinking rounds regular "ball" ammo is ok but not very accurate. bullet weight on "ball" is around 650 grains for more accurate ex-mil stuff you should get AP rounds these are normally 710 grains and the spotter rounds are 823grs. Just make sure of your back stop when shooting AP ammo.

limeyyank,

How's this: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=92033 ?

What looks odd to my untrained-eye is it says "Boxer Primed", yet says "Reloadable". I'm used to boxer-primed pistol ammo not being reloadable, but I guess that doesn't apply here?

Also says "Never Fired Brass" so I figure it's good to start with and then I can save it up and fire up the reloader next winter! ;f

Boxer primers are reloadable this is the same primer as all pistol and rifle cartridges use. Bernadian? primers use a anvil built into the case and 2 flash holes.

You're right! I was thinking "Berdan Primed" (ala' Wolf ammo) - Boxer is "the good stuff" - sorry all! ;g

btw - firing up the reloader means first buying the reloader - most 50 dies are 1.5" diameter [lee is less and may be useful, i'm not sure as all i've seen are the words] which means hornaday/rcbs/hollywood/corbin presses starting at about 350 for a kit with dies and up to megabux

When the Serbu BFG came out people were posting on Biggerhammer "club Serbu" then their serial number which usually came out something like CS65 or CS55.... Whatever your serial number is, that's you club #.
