I need some help deciding between these two. A friend of mine can get me either for the same price (free, he owes me). I have never owned either of these rifles before. Even though they will not be full-auto, I figured that this is the best place to ask!
Thanks guys.

they're both great, have the HK91, semi auto, a friend has the FN FAL, in my opinion the FN is the one to go with, the stock is longer and fits me better, I would trade the 91 for a real FN of like condition any day

I like the HK accessories and the rear sight, but the FAL fits better for me and shoots better for me.

I'd rather have the HK, if it was me. I lie HK products better than almost anything out there, and its worth more http://glocktalk.com/docs/gtubb/smile.gif

I'd take the G3.
- The G3 is recoil-operated. The FAL gas-operated, which means more parts that need to be cleaned and could break, and a gas-system that needs to be adjusted for proper operation.
- IMO the G3 has the better sights with the better sight picture. The sights of the FAL are mounted on two parts of the rifle, which does not enhance precision.
- The G3 does not have a bolt-catch, but is lighter and shorter.

both have their plus's and minus's but having shot both extensively, I like the FN better the longer stock fits me better leading to better accuracy for me. actually was looking for an FN model 50.00, and settled for the HK 91. both cost about the same, here in Ky. 2500 to 3000 dollars for either, or whichever is available, neither are abundant. as for the weight, the HK weighs a little over 11 pounds loaded, as for the gas regulator, that was specifically designed, because at the time of it's inception there was no single caliber, hence the regulator, so as to be able to produce the same basic rifle for different calibers, with only a barrel and magazine change, then adjust the regulator (factory set for the specific caliber) and it was able to adapt to any military caliber, of a rimless and short design, approximately 51 to 57 mm case length, a rifle ahead of it's time

Thanks for the input! I have to make my decision by Mon. They both feel nice in my hand, but I sure wish that I could take them to the range FIRST!

This might help me out some. How much are each of them worth (approximately)?

The FN is more accurate, and more reliable. The only bad thing about the FN is that the recoil spring can kill you if it hits your in the eye when detail stripping. Go with the FN, I've talked to HK fanatics who have to agree with me. HK is awesome, but as far as it goes, the FN takes the cake.

for the value, are we talking "REAL" FN's and H&K's not the parts gun knockoffs appearing everywhere for the last year. the copies are worth about 550 dollars new in box.
The real originals are usually priced from $2500 to $3000, in very good condition, both are worth about the sane but I would expect to pay a little more for the FN, as they are not as plentiful as the H&K's, these prices are for semi-auto non altered rifles

People with experience in the South-African border war (eg Angola) mostly held the FAL in high regard. Nobody liked the G3. No comparison.

The FN Fal was the Canadian army's rifle for many years and it's not for nothing.Canada was the first Nato country to use the FN fal, many others followed.I talked to alot of guys in the army who were around when we stil had FN and they say they like the FN better than the M-16 and would switch any day.

the G3's were the portuguese made ones and had the reputation of jamming or requiring more maintenance.

the south african R1 (FN FAL) is an excellent rifle and very accurate not to mention reliable.

FN rifles are made with tradition to gunsmithing.
Experiences with FALs & G3s turn me (as a Lithgow L1A1 owner)
to FN side. G3s are good - but. Stamped parts. Harsh recoil. Bad ergonomics. Evil thing to clean.
A friend of mine has a G3 full auto. He mounted a B-square sight mount on it - didnīt work, squished the receiver that the carrier could not move - OK, you say that is the mount what is wrong but
these are my 2 cents (oh I can say that, it is euro-time here)

No Flames.
