My new MK40 Elite is a beautiful pistol but there is one really annoying problem, it rattles loud enough to be heard while walking.
The problem is with the 5 round magazine that came with it. The extended mag fits perfectly and does not rattle at all. It's not the cartridges rattling in the mag, it's the fully loaded mag rattling in the gun's mag well. Any one else have this problem with their MK40? I have never noticed this in any of my previous Kahrs or the K9 and K40 that I presently own. Could be this mag is slightly out of specs. It's a shame it had to come with such an expensive pistol.
It rattles loud enough that my wife can hear it while we are walking together.

Just broke out my '98. Neither of my (2) 5 rounders rattle, loaded/unloaded. When U use the mag release, is it soft or stiff ? I believe that alot of the mag's retention hinges upon a stiff release.

My MK9 Elite does the same thing. Please keep me updated on what you find out, if you send it back for warranty repair, etc. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Hi LG, Mag release is very stiff. JW

Then I would suggest contacting Kahr. If U want to do a little sluething, try removing the grips (& possibly the slide) & compare the 2 mags to C where the shorter mag is rattling. On my 2 short mags, one is drop free & the other isn't. So it would appear that the OEM mags do vary a little.

LG--I did send an e-mail to Kahr, hopefully they'll answer. Thanks for your advise, think I will pull the grips just to see for myself. JW

Gunmeister,

I had this happen on my K40 covert with the 5 round mag. I just unloaded, then reloaded the mag with the same ammo and the rattle went away. I don't know it is will work everytime, but it worked for me.

Good luck.

I had a thread on this before. My Elite's were wiggling around but that is so that mag drops to the ground for sure and you can reload. I don't even recognize it anymore. You could always tighten your grips more and that will help. Let the screws just gaze over the mag, but it will still prevent the problem.

I want to point out, the rattle I experienced was the magazine rattling in the well, not the cartridges rattling in the magazine but what follows solved my rattling problem for reasons I can't explain. The problem could be that I'm using 180gr Speer Gold Dot JHPs, I just don't know.
After I read AZTRAVELER's post, I tried his suggestion to empty and reload the magazines. After I emptied and reloaded the magazines, I tried an old trick we used on Colt 1911 magazines when I was in the service back in the 50's. We always smacked the back of the Colt magazines on the palm of our hand to ensure the cartridges were lined up in the magazine properly.
Well I tried that on the Kahr mags, I firmly rapped the back of the mag on the palm of my hand, then I rapped the floorplate on the palm of my hand and got a rather loud click as the cartridges reseated them selves. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that when loading mags by pushing the rounds down with the next round, the rounds do not fully set themselves up properly. I tried this reloading procedure several times and when rapped on the floorplate, as I said before, there is a load click and the top round pops up nose high, after inserting the magazine in the well, voila no more rattles. It worked for me, hope it works for you.

A fix to the rattle is round felt circles that you put on the bottom of furniture. Stick one on each side and no more rattle.

I would be very cautious with this to make sure there is nothing that the pads could potentially get hung up on and prevent an empty magazine from dropping free in an emergency.

The mag's still get locked in the same way. It just prevents the side to side motion from causing noise. Nothing else. Don't put the cirlces near the release button. Put them low! There are many things you can do that I have done. Just takes a little innovation. If you have any gunsmithing skills (maybe took class or two, you should be able to figure out a solution. Gunmsiester has major skills. I know this for a fact. I am sure by now the problem is solved.
