View Full Version : Holster/Scope advice needed for Super Redhawk
My son and I are getting ready to hunt hogs with my 7.5 inch Super Redhawk .44 magnum and I have two questions:
1. Is a scope recommended ?
2. What holster would you suggest ?
We plan to use dogs for our first trip.
Thank you in advance,
I have the same gun ,never hunted hogs with it but shot my share of deer. What I did was hunted with it with no scope the first 2 yrs (helped me develop my shooting skills) then I went to a 2-6x scope ,great for a stand but next to impossible to hit something moving. The last 2 yrs I've had a red dot scope on it which is the best of both worlds I'll probaby never take it off the gun. As for the holster I have a uncle mikes belt holster which I cut some of the front out of so it would fit with the red dot scope . Good luck it's an awesome gun, will shoot anything you feed it and hold up.
I didn't mount a scope on my 7 1/2" SRH. (have a scope on my TC)
I carry it cross draw in a Bianchi Cyclone holster.
The red dot scope sounds interesting. I'm assuming you mean the type mentioned HERE (http://www.opticsplanet.net/red-dot-scopes.html) . Do you have any brand preferences ?
I've got a 9.5" SRH that I carry in a shoulder holster when hunting with it.
I also use a red dot scope on it. The one I use just happened to be one that I had, a C-More with a 6 or 8 MOA dot.
Will I just order a propoint for my thru middway last week ( they have them on sale ) and can't wait to see what it does when i get.
I've decided to use the Bianchi 4101 Ranger Holster for my SRH.
Now all I have to do is decide on which red dot scope to order. Will I need an adapter for the scope in order to attach to the Ruger SRH ? All of the scopes I've seen so far have a Weaver base.
I used the scope mounts that came with the SRH , just need a red dot with a 1" tube. Like this> http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/product.asp?dept%5Fid=180607&sku=19778&imgid=&mscssid=N3D0C03U1FFL8JMR4JKP71GEMAB9ATCD
If you go with the C-More, Leupold makes a stainless base that goes right on the frame into the notches that are there.
The C-More takes the constant pounding of the .44 mag with no problems.
Just don't bother putting a BSA red dot on it.
I was given a BSA Red Dot for Christmas a few years ago. It lasted 3 rounds before the glass shattered.

My 9 1/2" SRH has been wearing a Bushnell 2-6x scope for many a year now and I have had zero problems with this combo, even shooting a ton of heavy 240 and 300gr ammo.
It is also carried in an Uncle Mike's Bandoleer holster. Again, zero problems and I find the rig quite comfortable while hunting.
