Any owner's of these? Your views of the bikes?

A friend of mine had a KLR 650. They are old but proven technology. Not very smooth or refined but very customizable.

He rode lots of miles on his but recently sold it and is looking at a Suzuki V-Strom.

The KLR's have a cult following. You'll find lots of friends if you get one.

The KLR250 is not a fast machine at all, at least the ones I've ridden.

The KLR650, I've never ridden, but they seem huge. I ride a CR500 and I would really question my ability to control a KLR650 off road. For dirt roads and fire roads the KLR wouldn't be too bad. But I'd dread having one in the sand or at the base of a steep hill.

IMO, the Honda XR250 and XR650 are superior in terms of power, weight and handling. The Hondas are more expensive.

The KLRs I'm sure are fine on the road, probably more comfortable than the Hondas, but I don't think the KLRs hold a candle to the Hondas once the pavement ends.

Ground clearance
KLR650 9.4"
XR650 13"

Suspension F/R

KLR650 9.1"/9.1"
XR650 11.6"/11"

The KLR has a 6 gallon gas tank, Honda has a 2.8 gal.
The KLR has a windscreen and street tires.
The XR has DOT approved "knobbies".

It seems that the KLR is more oriented for street riding with the occasional dirt trip, which may or may not be ideal for you.

Good luck.

I have the KLR650. Its not a dirt bike, if you want big air and single track its not the bike for you. It can become a wallowing pig in loose sand. It is a great bike to run down the freeway at 80 mph then onto a fire road or jeep trail. Besides all the dirt bikers will love you since you always have a couple extra gallons of fuel. I run DOT knobbies on mine and do about 50/50 street/dirt.
