Are the contestants going to be used for anything special? Plan on carrying them? Just gonna plink with them? Etc.

Also more importantly have you had a chance to fondle them in person?

personally for an ankle gun... i assume as a BUG, i'd use something smaller than those...more along the lines of a P3AT or maybe a little wheel gun.

bout the same size as an s40.. all around.. im just not a fan of the g27.. shot my roomates and BLAH.. not impressed by comparison to the steyr. trigger pull on the 27 was substandard for my liking.

Cheapest i found that Sub-XD for was 419. I'd suggest finding a local store where you could handle it or shoot it...looks like it wouldnt fit my hand all that well. If you just want it by all means get it. I haven't heard anything overly terrible about them.

Hey ripped,

How do you like that xd40 sub? I own 2 xd40 service models and love them. I condsidered the xd-sub for carry, but they seema little thicker than the S40 I already own, and I don't have any desire to carry a light attachment. All-in-all, the XD's are great guns. One of the best guns available in that price range, IMO. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Should I decide to buy another pistol specifically for CC, the XD was on the "gotta check out" list. Interesting comparison with the S, however; in stand-alone photos, the XD looks VERY compact. But not so much when next to the Steyr.

The barrel even looks a lot shorter, but I think it's just perception; when next to the Steyr, it's a marginal difference.

Thanks for the pix.

from looking at it it appears that since the slide on the XD is so much taller it makes the barrell look shorter.

(formerly Steyrd Straight)

I rented an XD40 full size before I got my Glock 19. They had a great deal going on for the 4" and 5" guns, $469 NIB with XD paddle holster and 3 mags. Wow!

I liked shooting the XD, and liked the trigger shape and pull quite a bit, but it just doesn't fit my big hands right. Even though both the XD and Steyr both feel better in my hand, the Glock gives me better natural trigger reach. It may seem weird, but it's true. Guess it goes to show, different strokes for different folks. I actually like the square grip of the Glock too, it just seems to grab at my hand.

I do miss that Steyr trigger. I'm trying hard to get in anywhere near as good in the G19. So far I've popped in a Scherer 3.5# connector and Lone Wolf Overtravel stop, but it's just not as crisp. The XD is more of a rival for the Steyr trigger than the Glock, IMHO.

What I don't like about the XD is the lack of tennifering or similiar finish, it's really unexcusable that the gun doesn't come with a more corrosion-resistant finish, just in my opinion.

I have to agree with the comments about the finish of the XD, it does leave a lot to be desired. However, in support of the XD, I would also say that with proper care, the XD finish will hold up just as well as any blued gun. I think many gun owners have become spoiled by the tennifer finish of the glock and expect every gun to provide the same durability. Glock did their finish right, and Springfield would be wise to improve the finish of their XD line if they want to compete.

As I mentioned before, though, the XD's are great guns, in terms of both function and value.

I still carry my S40 concealed, but I would, without hesitation, choose an XD40 over an M40 for on-duty carry.

i thought the new gen xd's had a much improved finish?

Nope, sorry. The new XD's still have the same old finish. Springfield will take care of finish issues (if you experience them) without question. But that still means mailing in the gun, waiting for them to do the refinish and sending it back, in short, down time.

The XD's have a solid design, but the finish needs serious improvements. Of course you could always buy one like I have, with a stainless slide. This will eliminate many of the finish concerns, but you have to like the look. I actually own one with a stainless slide and one with the standard black finish. My advise is, get one of each and see how they compare, you won't regret it.
