I posted this on THR a while back, and just noticed the SNS forum here, so figured I'd look for some more advice.

A friend was going to scrap an H&R New Model hammerless pistol. I bought it from him just to save it from being melted down.

I took it out to shoot and found it shoots high and left by about 6" at 7 yards.

Is it possible to bend the barrel on a revolver or would this mess up the cylinder/barrel spacing? There isn't enough metal on either the front or rear sights to really modifiy them. Any other ideas?

I realize these are very cheap pistols, but would like to be able to hit something with if it ever comes out of the safe again.

thanks

Barrels on revolvers can be bent "slightly" but it's best to get a smith who has done it before. Too much WILL wreck the timing.

Does it shoot that way from the bench with a good solid rest and grip?

BTW, what caliber?

First, a correction: the pistol is shooting high and left--I had to aim low and right to be on paper.

oldgranpa,

The one time I shot it, it wasn't from the bench. But, once I figured out where the bullets where going, I started aiming at the bottom right of the target and was getting very good groups.

Once I discovered where to aim, I (possibly incorrectly) ruled out it was my fault.

It is a .38S&W. I haven't been able to find any more bullets for it since finishing the box that came with it so I haven't taken it out for further practice.

OK, 38S&W is kinda obsolete. Still see a few around, friend showed me an old nickle plated Smith the other day. I had an H&R once, but like you say, ammo is hard to find. And then usually only plain lead (unjacketed) is available. Winchester and Remington still make some but unless a dealer is willing to stock it, hard to find.
Sounds like maybe the gun was dropped at one time knocking the barrel out of line.
My opinion is try to trade it for a 38special, if you like revolvers.
Good luck,
