reckon with all the "KB! that glock has had......they would feel right at home here too huh?
Seem to be reading alot of bad things about them on the boards lately but I would never consider them to be a SNS. They are a reputable and quality manufacturer although the QC seems to be lacking right now. All of the manufacturers go through some rough times. Who can forget the Colt All American or the early run of S&W 500 Mags blowing apart.;P

Frankly, I've had better luck with Taurus revolvers than Smith and Wesson.
I've bought four new Smith and Wesson revolvers over the past several years. All had serious problems that required trips back to the factory out of the box. Most of them I didn't want to keep afterward. So all but one have been sold.
I've bought five Taurus revolvers and not had problems. So go figure what I'm planning to buy in the next couple of weeks? That's right! I'm going to look at buying another Taurus wheelgun. FWIW, I used to have a PT92 about 15 years ago, but had to get rid of it when I needed cash. It was a great gun. I wish I still had it.
For the curious:
Smith and Wesson's track record -
10 spit lead, traded it
686 started having light primer strikes within 100 rounds, ended up being nonoperational, still have it after getting it fixed
642 didn't lock up tightly enough to prevent lead shaving and spitting(out of the box), got it fixed and traded it, since the problem wasn't completely remedied, took a hell of a hit, since they dropped the price on the 642 while I was waiting to get it back from repair
60 not timed properly, if the gun wasn't operated vigorously enough, the cylinder didn't make it all the way to the next chamber and the bolt didn't line up with the bolt notch, got it fixed it's on consignment now, waiting for a new home
Taurus' Track Record -
85 hesitated slightly when cocked for single-action shots, didn't affect DA and didn't prevent use of SA, you could just feel a hitch as you thumbed the hammer back, qualified with this little gun, didn't actually notice the problem until I'd had it for awhile since I hadn't tried to shoot it SA, the service folks fixed it up though
605, no problems, just needed cash so I had to let it go
I now have three Taurus 851s. All of them have been great so far. Two of them are approaching 700 rounds, still nice and tight and accurate. The newest one only has about 125 rounds through it, though. An accidental drop did cause the rear sight blade to come loose on one of them, but I put it back in and resighted the little gun in. No problems otherwise, and I'm not sure how you can blame the manufacturer for that.
So, say what you want about Taurus, my experience with the company and their products has been great! Which makes me wonder how much of what is posted is first-hand experience. I mean, I've read stories about Glocks exploding...
Also, I've seen a new "rainbow" finish on SIGs, and some pretty duded up S&Ws and Peacemakers, so I guess those are SNS too?

Here's the sig....
Dead Man's Hand
02-26-2005, 21:51
Well my experience is the exact oppisite as your's.
3 Taurus revo's and 1 semi all 4 were lemons. A 650CIA that siezed up and had to be sent back, a 85 Titanium that had the same problem, a 431 that did the same thing and had a timing issue, and a PT-92 that began to rattle like it was full of change after it's first box of ammo. All of them did not make it past 100 rounds of range fodder before problems arose and all of them had to go back mulitible times because they did not do a very good job fixing them the first time.
On the 431 I took it to a local gunsmith rather then send it back to Taurus again and we were appauled to find what we did. Taurus had replaced the sear, hand, and springs with parts from other models! After having him replace all the wrong parts and smooth everything over it has worked well since but after the intial price, 2 trips back to Taurus and the gunsmithing I still had to have done it should be.
On the other hand I have had 5 S&W's and none of them had a problem. My Scandium 340PD had a recall but they paid shipping both ways and had it back in a week, no problems with it after that.
I know a lot of people have never had a single problem with Taurus but a lot have as well, seems to me that they are a crap shoot with about 50/50 odd's.

From what I've seen, every manufacturer can crank out some lemonade.
And that's my point.
You didn't have good luck with Taurus. OK. Fair enough, and frankly I am sorry about that, it's always a disappointment to lay out hard earned green for a purchase, only to start having problems from the start.
I didn't have good luck with Smith and Wesson or Glock(and I'm not alone), but I didn't start trashing either one of those manufacturers and labeling them SNS because I had bad experiences. If I followed your lead, I could start Glock and Smith SNS threads, and would be justified in doing so. I dare say that following this logic, we can also add threads here for Beretta, Colt, HK, Kahr, Walther and pretty much every other major manufacturer.
Plus I don't think a company that won an editor's choice award last year for their 24/7 and received similar kudos when they introduced their Total Titanium line a few years ago is quite the same as companies that use sintering and zinc frames to make firearms that retail for $100.

Yep, I've actually seen one in a dealer's case. I think they're worse in person. Who do you think the target market is for these gussied up handguns anyway? I mean, I love my Tauruses, but I wouldn't want to carry one of the gold trinketry enhanced guns. They look nice in a display, but I don't have a display room in my house.

I just picked up a 1991 Vintage 99AF, shoots like a dream, no FTF, FTE and its a tack driver w/o the beretta price. I think its smart marketing for the pimp guns. Im sure if others (S&W, Colt) made them, they would sell to that crowd.

An excellent idea for a new reality show.;z
You could put your pimped piece on the hood of your gold tricked escalade, and it would match!
I have a old 92 without the decocker.
Gun has 3500+ rounds thru it.
1/3 of which +P.
The only thing that has been replaced
is the mag release spring.
The spring was known for being weak on
the original ones.
Buddy has a 92 with decocker and has replaced
the extractor under warranty.
He has about 2000+ rounds thru his.

This Brethren member thinketh you are wrong. :)
Of the twenty-something new (New) guns I've acquired in the last two years, 5 of them were made by Taurus. No complaint about any of 'em.
And not just the revolvers. Their latest pistol, the "24/7" has me tickled pink. :)

I have a Taurus revolver. Pricewise, it makes the cut at 2 C-bills cost for very lightly used. Sizewise, it may not make the cut...medium frame model 66 in .357 magnum with 6" barrel...I guess I could carry it in the car ;}
Nearly 50% of the 700 rounds that I have put through it have been magnums and no problems...will make a helluva scouting & hunting sidearm.

I'm considering the Taurus PT25 in an all black w/wood grips. Best online price $144 + shipping.
Would sure like to hear about any experience those of you might have with a PT25.

Bought the PT25 through my dealer, NIB, OTD, $212. All Black with Rosewood grips. Mfg. date per Taurus, Dec 2004. Amazing how much it resembles the Beretta Bobcat design, tip-up barrel, recoil spring design, ejector but no extractor, etc.
Range test it fired everything, 3 brands of FMJ and 2 brands JHP without any problems. Accuracy fair using offhand at 10yds as shown in the photo.
Compared JHP expansion with my Beretta 950 and expansion and penetration of both GoldDot and Hornady were essentially the same at about .455". But penetration with JHP is not too good at only 5 - 6" in the wetpack. This doesn't meet requirements for good CCW.
FMJ penetration was very good at up to 9" in the wet paper, equal to about 14" gelatin.
So to carry one of these for backup it should be loaded with FMJ and you better practice a lot.
A year ago I had tried a used PT25, date of mfg. 1999, and the pistol would FTE the last round. It had a lot of wear. Lesson here is better buy a new one if you are thinking about a PT25.
This completes my .25acp collection. Not buying anymore.

I agree. My PT99AF is the secret darling of my gun collection. I don't keep it in the front of the safe with the H&K's and customs, but it's never let me down. Cocked and locked, safety on the frame where it belongs, longest site radius of my entire collection with adj sights, 16rds.
I had a nice model 83 (38spec) in satin nickel (goldish) and a model 669 (357mag), both 4". My 1989 pt '99 is built like a tank.I'm keeping my eye open for a 24/7. ;? As for the pimped out Tauruses; those are the MDS's. Miami Dealer Specials ,lol.;a
Nice to see so many fellow Taurus lovers, and not a single Taurus basher among you all. Just clean honest opinions, thank you.
I have a ever-growing collection of Taurus firearms, with my favorite being a PT945 with factory ported barrel.
I am still waiting on a few little gems to hit the market, like the PT1911SS, PT809, 24/7 OSS (in 9mm & 45cal) and I'd like to latch onto a PT909, PT975 (both out of production).
Currently my collection:
24/7 45cal
24/7 9mm
PT92 (non-decocker)
PT92 (decocker)
PT908 9mm
PT945 45cal
PT1911 45cal
PT145 45cal
Suppose I need to buy a few Taurus wheel guns soon ;)
I do own many, many other firearms. The above are just my Taurus collection. Any evil black rifle lovers here? (I have them too)
I agree Taurus has had some QC and CS problems. They should work on it.
However, none of the Tauri I have had ever gave me problems....
85TT

I have been through 5 Rugers;
M77 MkII
SP101 (2.25")
SP101 3"
GP100 3"
MKII
The shorter SP101 had problems with binding when it got warm, it was replaced by a Taurus.
Everyone puts out crap once in a while, both Colts I had were crap.
Taurus sells a whole bunch of guns too.;)

I own two Tauri, a M66SS4 7-shot .357 and a PT145PRO.
Both have been totally reliable and accurate(especially the M66SS4).
I also have a Rossi M68 that has been 100%.
I own two S&W's, a Model 18-3 and a Model 642.
Both have been totally reliable and accurate(especially the 18-3).
IMO, Taurus does NOT belong here!
This forum is for the likes of Lorcin, Jennings/Bryco, etc.
(I must admit that I have a Bryco M48 .380 that has digested over 2K of various ammo with only a $20 slide needing replaced due to shooting Hi-Vel's through it.)

I have only had Taurus 85's in .38..... I can only say I have only had Good Luck with these wapons, as a matter of fact I have had problems with S&W snubbies but no I'll say again NONE with Taurus. I love these little snubbies. At this time I have a .85 UL, It is black with White mother of pearl handles and Gold trim (hammer, trigger, and cyl. release) and also with a ported barrel. It is a sweet weapon.

I've had a Taurus model 80 I bought new for $169 somewhere around 1983 give or take a year. It has'nt ever given me any problems. Also I have a Jennings J22 bought around the same time. I shot them both today along with my S&W MP40 and Glock30. I love them all. 50 rounds of CCI Stingers and not one misfire or jam with the J22:thumbsup:

I have a model 94. its a lot older then the Taurus pistols most you have wrote about, but the gun has given me nothing but trouble from day one. It may be that Taurus has improved their QC over the years but I have a bad taste in my mouth.
Mr SNS
Model 94 in 22cal? Could you give us a bit of details as to what kind of problems you are having? Most 22's troubles, regardless of brand can be related to ammo more then functional problems of the firearm and with yours being a revolver it leaves even less room for problems other then 22 ammo.
My second questions is that if you've had the gun for so long, with it being nothing but troubles, why haven't you sold or traded it off on something else?
Please don't think I am coming down on you, its just then I've been a smithy for well over 20 years and I like fixing things...

No problem, they are honest questions.
My 94 is in .22 Mag. it was given to me by my Aunt when my Uncle passed away.. My uncle was a dwarf. He used it as his CCW weapon in Texas. The 94, .22 Mag was the biggest gun he could handle. At the time I had not tryed the gun. If I had I would have made him get something else.
I've never sold or traded a gun before it just sits more or less at the bottom of my safe. Col Cooper once wrote that "Its a sin to sell your guns. Only sell as a true last resort. You should either give a gun away or pass it along as part of your estate". I have four boys and one daughter. they all know it's my problem gun.
The trigger will suddenly become bonded in both single action as well as double action. Its not the shells backing out of the cylinder because the binding happens with the gun unloaded.

I knew Cooper well, a wealth of one liners and wisdom all in one package ;)
Have you ever disassembled the pistol to see what may be binding? Also, you do know that Taurus has a life time repair warranty regardless of how many times it changed owners.

No I did not know that. It's something I'll have to look into.

Over at http://www.taurusarmed.net/ there is a wealth of information, help and follow Taurus owners. And even a Customer Service Rep from Taurus has recently joined our forums to try and answer some questions.
Also, I recently added a simple little how-to for swapping out the magazine release for left handed shooters, that should work on all Taurus Polymer framed pistols to-date. Just incase any lefty's read this.
Stop by, maybe we can help... ;)

This is interesting. Model 94s are .22lrf only and 9 shooters. Model 941s are the .22magnums only nad hold 8 rounds.
As this is a tight fit rimfire tearing the revolver down to its basics parts or giving it a thorough cleaning( this includes around the ejector star, firing pin hole, and ejector rod assembly)are vital.
Nooks and crannies need to be cleaned out with cotton swabs, dental picks, toothpicks,or pipe cleaners. These need a solvent or good cleaner on them. Then use dry ones or patches to get dirt and crud out.
I have had to sit down after every range session that 100 or more rounds were used and do this with any of the above mentioned materials.

I just couldn't let this thread fade away.
Don't blame you, I kind of like this little thread too. Nice to see people that own Taurus firearms speaking up about just how good they really are, instead of all the BS you normally read about them, that for the most part either is an out right lie or partial truth bloated and distorted by biased (non-owners) people against Taurus.
Lets face it, the 3 top firearm makers are Taurus, Springfield, and Glock right now, with others quality gun makerslike Ruger, S&W, Beretta taking up the slack.. ;)
