I'm down with carb problems right now, then I'm getting married March 5th then back to the track for what should be an 11 second pass :)

All for less than $2000 including the car when it was a 4cyl

Here goes my stang...not much more than stock though. 4.10s, LTs, 2 1/2 exh and a few other little stuff. Gotta get some decent aluminum heads and what not. Got an explorer intake and bigger air meter, injectors and junk sittin in the corner. My goals for near future is just high 12's on stock bottom end and no major mods.

Well, 11 seconds is faster than my old Chevy... I am lucky to get low 13s on a good day.

Might try you in the twisties though, give you a run for your money ;)

On a side note, what years did they have the LX notch-back style (none of the gawdawful hatch crap for me, bucko!) like that used by the CHP cars? 90-92 or something like that? I think it was the change right after the one like Ghetto is driving, where they scaled back the rubber on the nose.

I have always wanted to get one of those to play with, fix up a bit.

And LX notch was 87-93 with aero flat headlamps like mine and the rest were 4 eyed from 79-86.

Well you could of said it a little nicer but this is Glock talk after all. `p

Hatches arent quite as sturdy and light as a coupe but if you enjoy more than being the absolute fastest car in the world the hatchback does allow for some benefits. Like the fact that I fit a 32" tv on the folded down seats with hatch closed ;f . Cant do that in my Lincoln. The fastback/hatchback rivalry goes all the way back to the 65 though huh? If you ask me...they both look kick ass

Whoa... had no idea I was opening up an old rivalry. I don't know much about Mustangs, I just know what I like. ;f

Hell, I drive a Corvette but I won't even buy one that has a hatch window in back. There hasn't been a coupe made since 1978 that I like. That horrendous bubble window hatch thing in the back completely ruins the lines in my opinion. Chevy did a great thing bringing back the FRC in the C5's, and a stupid thing letting it disappear again with the C6's. My distaste runs deep enough that when my wife finally decides to get that C6 she has been talking about, I am going to try and talk her into getting a convertible. That way, when my son graduates college in two years, I can get a Z06 and do a body swap with her car. ;a

Cool, I didn't know the Magum came in an R/T trim! There was a thread on the Corvette forum about a Magnum keeping pace with a 2002(?) C5 into the triple digits. Those things can move, eh?

What do you think of the car as a whole? I love the looks and, of course, the Hemi idea, but don't know anyone whoactually owns one.

How about a "Mini-review"?

Wicked96SS
03-02-2005, 10:29
Hey there Texas_Preacher...

The car is pretty fast... low 6 second 0-60, I think it is geared pretty nice... but it is nothing compared to my ole Impala!!

The RT is the V8 version of the car. 5.6 Liter, 340 HP. Mine is black with every option (navigation, blue tooth, satellite radio) except the roof rack. Didn't like the way it looked on the car.

Anyhow, the car is really smooth, comfortable, and quick. The gas mileage isn't that bad, gets about 18 MPG mixed driving (highway, city, and at least one WOT 0-60 on the way to work). Have only done one long highway drive, and got 22 MPG in it. I owe this of course to the "variable displacement" system on the Hemi. When you are cruising 4 cylinders shut off (no fuel, no spark), giving you better gas milage.

I got that instead of a Vette or even one of the new GTOs because I liked the looks, and it gives me enough room to haul rifles and stuff for the house around. Although, I am still working up the nerve to haul something messy in it!!

Not to sound like flaming but you are kidding right? I dont really wanna get into it sounding like a kid but examples, C6 Corvette, Z06 Corvette, 03-04 Cobra Mustang, 05 Mustang GT, Lightning, 05 GTO(400 horse),I won't mention Ford GT because it kinds expensive but it aint like a Viper is cheap either. So I see SRT neon and SRT Ram, I give them both props because they both perform mightily but I'm not being one sided even as a Blue oval guy. Well say it however you want...stock SRT4 in newest setup is good for high 13s driven properly am I wrong? My favorite bang for buck example being a mustang guy, 03-04 Cobra...mid 12's stock driven properly. Pulley, exhaust, burn, gears and here we go 11's .Anyone can play the boost game. For that matter they sell turbo kits for a fox body mustang that will drop it right into the 11s without even tuning it...its 4-5 grand but it comes with everything. Least thats what I read in an article where they did the full install on a dead stock mustang 5.0 down to the air box, intake and tb. Absolutely no traction.

I have to agree that it must be hella fun to run around that fast with a neon. Its like almost the perfect sleeper except to those who know about them ahead of time. But you can't compare a turbocharged orange to a stock apple if ya know what I mean. I'm poor and only have an old stock apple but I'm slowly doing what I can with my small means.

Well lets talk apples to apples. Is your car stock? Yeah? Mine either. POwerful moters in CARS WE CAN AFFORD!

Seriously, I would agree with that in the compact car market. SVT focus is a terrable waste of cash, as is the SS cobalt. Neither of those companies are willing to make (sell in the Us actually) a car that rivals the performance of their bigger, more epensive mustang or the late camaro/firebird/GTO. Their loss :p.

Ford302Glock21
03-09-2005, 12:16
Why would a focus come with the same acceleration as the mustang? Its a focus. Why would a cavalier accelerate like a camaro? Dodge has neither the Mustang or Camaro type car so why the hell not turbocharge a neon? Theres nothing else to compete with sales...its not gonna stop people from buying vipers or SRT10 Rams. They have been doing the turbo 4 thing for like 20 years havent they? Might as well go with what you are good at. I do feel kinda skiddish when I'm drivin my mustang and I see a neon with a little badge and two exhaust tips that I know will smoke my *****...but then I also remember my car cost 1700 bucks and is 18 years old so I'm not TOO ashamed ;f

Toxie
03-09-2005, 21:54
Why would a focus come with the same acceleration as the mustang?

But a better question is, Why not? Dodge did it. People will still buy the 'stang for the V8. Chevy has NO excuse, because they dont even make a camaro anymore. I was simply saying that if you don't want to compete then no one will buy your cars.

phxtravis
03-09-2005, 22:00
Ford302Glock21 was simply stating that Ford, Chevy, or any other manufacturer are going to be a little leary(sp?) in producing two cars that will compete. A Focus compete with a Mustang?? but if someone could get a car that is as fast as A $35,000 Mustang for $20,000-$25,000 they probably would, you can argue that this could be good for a company but then again thats a big risk. And since the Mustang is Ford flagship car, I seriously doubt that they want to dwarf its sales.

Ford302Glock21

Yea exactly...the underdog is supposed to take out the competitors sales not your own. The mustang is one of the best selling cars of all time, why would they take a newcomer soon-be-gone grocery getter import competitor and make it go all out on their own performance line of cars. Theres a couple times they did something like this with the T bird Super Coupes and the SHO Taurus but I dont either of them was actually faster...a hair slower maybe. But back then mustangs were high 14s 1/4 so it wasnt that big of a job to get similar power. It would take alot more work on a focus to match up a 99-05 model GT mustang for power. Turbo power...as I mentioned Dodge has no performance line of cars like mustang or camaro...they only have R/T badges and now SR/T Badges they slap on anything with a tuned exhaust or a Viper V10 motor. Neon is not stealing sales from anything because there is no dodge performance car for mid class buyers, until now with the SRT4. I think its a very interesting addition to the cars out there on the road. Something to give a run to the G35s, 350 Zs, Acuras, Maximas, 04 GTO, and the rest of the high 13 capable cars for 35 grand.

Toxie
03-10-2005, 22:27
Just FYI, they sell an AWD 250HP focus in europe, so it is both possible and finantially viable. IT is based loosely on their rally car. They just won't bring it over here. I fully understand what you are saying, I simply find it deplorable (Hence why I won't buy a ford/GM vehicle).

Ford302Glock21
03-11-2005, 15:59
Woudlnt an AWD focus with 250 horsepower(must be turbo) cost like at least 30 grand here in the states? It would then negate the effect of being a cheaper than the pony car bang for buck car. It would be cool is Ford had an available AWD type killer car that could take on the likes of the EVO and STI. But then idunno the mustang would be lost. The whole reason I like mustangs are because they are not out of this world in cost, have a bazillion aftermarket mods, can be made to do anything you want in performance, and have probably the best past time of any american car. I guess the only thing it doesnt have is AWD. For me though, I would not want a budget car with AWD because it says to me that it will cost a fortune to purchase initially, to repair when exotic floating differentials and transfer cases go bad and weigh an extra 300 pounds. Those are some of the downfalls of the eclipses and 3000GTs. I remember hearing that 3000GTs had sealed transmission that you cannot simply rebuild and cost about 2500 or something outrageous to get another one. More weight, more fragile, more cost...but damn crazy ass traction. Such a compromise. If I was a rich person and could have whatever I wanted I could see myself getting an STI but being a Mustang/Ford person that might change to a Cobra with some bolt ons. STI sure is a bad car though

Toxie
03-11-2005, 22:29
With the 03/04 cobra Ford fonally got it right. I think the Eruo conversion made the Focus around 25k new. About the same price as a Subaru WRX. As far as AWD reliability, Subaru has been doing it in all their cars since 1995, and It has come quite a ways. I personally think that it will be an option on allmost all cars in the furure, and standard on most.

One of my other good car buddies has a 97 I think neon, which he has been tinkerin with on low budget like I have. He bought an R/T motor and redid internals and had the head mega ported and is running some heavy duty high compression. Kept blowing white smoke though but just had machine shop look at block and said it wasnt 100% so he had it machined just a hair and hopefully it will go back together and run some high 13s, low 14s all motor. See I dont hate dodges THAT much lol. Even helped him work on it!
