View Full Version : .308 for Hogs
Need your advice on which ammo to use. Maybe not ideal, but I have the following ammo on hand. If you had to choose, what rounds are best suited for hogs (meat hog approx. 150#)?
1) 168 Sierra BTHP Match @ 2600
2) 165 Ballistic Tip @ 2600
3) 150 Ballistic Tip @ 2800
Trusty 29 will be back-up ;f
What're are the distances you will be shooting, and how large are the hogs? I use 150gr core-loks in my .06 and have killed ~15 hogs ranging from 50-300+. I have had ONE hog run after being shot, and he made it about 30 yards before it was lights out. I think any of your choices will work fine. Hogs aren't that hard to kill, so the bullet isn't all the important. If you were hunting grizzly bears or something then you might need to get super picky.
Have a friend in CA that uses milsurp 147grn. ball ammo. Says it tumbles slightly on impact, creates a big wound channel, and kills'em just fine.
I too can now vouch that the 308 is more than adequate.
Shot a 200+lbs hog yesterday....190 yard shot, broke his neck and dropped him on the spot ;f Second shot ended the flopping and guaranteed his wasn't going anywhere. Complete pass through with both shots, so I did't recover bullets. Used 150gr. Nosler SP solid base @ 2800fps.
Where did you go hunting? What type of rifle were you using, what scope? Fill us in on all the details! Hope you had a great time.
This is my load,Fed 215,Rem cases,44 grains RL15 and 180 grain Nosler BT. This load is clocked at 2650 fps at 5 yards. This load is used in my Tikka 595 with a 23.5 inch barrel and loaded above Sammi pressures. I smoked a 185lb dressed buck with it last year.
