View Full Version : CAR vs. M4 upper differences?
What are the differences in the CAR and M4 uppers? I haven't been able to really find this info here or on ar15.com. Is it just the different type of handguard? I am buying an upper kit soon and would like to know the difference. The Model1Sales kit for the M4 is $40 more than the CAR - why?
Thanks.
Just to clarify...I know the military M4 has the shorter barrel, I'm talking about the civilian 16" barrel. Thanks.
I think its the thickened portion of the barrel designed to support the M203.
I would like to know as well.

There really is no set specification for civilian semi-auto M4 rifles, so a company can make changes and still call it whatever they like. Things I have seen different between these two types of carbine are:
- Barrels that are heavier or lighter than an M4-type barrel.
- M4 handguards are slightly larger and oval in cross-section than the small round CAR handguards.
- M4-type rifles usually have a flattop upper with or without a carry handle; the CAR-type rifles were A2-style carry handles only.
- (And on the lower) The stock on the CARs was a 2- or 4-position stock with no reinforcing ribs; M4s have a six-position stock with cool little ventilated ribs on the side. ;f

Probably one of the biggest differences is the ramps that are cut in to the M4 upper recieve, this is something only done to M4's as far as I know. The barrel is usally has an M4 style barrel extenion, to match up with the feed ramps in the upper, along with the different profile for the barrel. You could have a M4 with a flat top or the A2 style.

Hey swede explain what you mean by the ramps that are cut in to the upper on M4's. Thanks. And one last thing to RicVa you can own the 14.5 inch barrel, the flash suppressor just has to be permantly attached ie: pinned and/or welded on. It's up to you I myself have both, although I must admit the 16 inch shoots better groups.
