We're talking around a roadcourse. I know there are some racers here who might have seen it firsthand. I would be VERY suprised to see an S2000 beat a Cobra, or a STI/Lancer EVO. Whadayall think is the fastest car around $35k new?

not sure on the price, but I heard the BMW Z3's are crazy fast(the one with the larger engine of coarse), a VERY nice power to weight ratio. With that being said and knowing that the Z3 is no longer manufactured I would guess that the Z4 performs well.

It would depend on the course. Tighter courses would favor the light and nimble, courses with longer straights would favor high HP.

Them S2000 owners think they have something really hot. I can't wait to catch one on a bridge when I'm on the bike.

The old Z3M was fairly fast on the straightaway but were dogs around the curves. The chassis and suspension on the Z3 were simply too old. It wasn't too bad with the old M3 engine (245-hp), but when BMW stuffed the newer M3 engine (315-hp slightly detuned from 333-hp), it was all over the place. The chassis couldn't handle the torque and flexed too much.

I would like to see a bevy of supposedly handling cars like the Sti, Evo, Mustang Cobra, et al to go up against the S2000, the Z4 and the Boxster on a road course.

I think that it was Motor Trend (I'm thinking Automobile magazine), but it was one of the Big Three motor mags that did a comparison between old race cars against the Miata, S2000 and the Lotus Elise. The Elise with all its supposed supercar handling and acceleration, barely nudged out the S2000.

But if I were in the market for a car that I'm going to take to road races on regular basis and be damned with luxury and comfort, I'd somehow come up with the extra $10,000 and get the Lotus Elise before anything else.

The EVO8 and STI are more real-life friendly then either the Lotus, Z4 or S2000. Unless you are a highly trained or practiced individual the difference between the cars is relatively unimportant.

If you get an EVO8 or STI, you get a car thats nearly unbeatable in the dirt, snow and rain. ALso a killer in a drag.

If it's JUST a road race toy, then by all means get a custom made dart for qute cheaply, and with the extra money buy a motorcycle.

Bone stock, brand new, off the showroom floor, street legal, walk down to the dealer and drive home in it, TODAY. I mean I could build a pretty bad ass 'Busa powered shifter kart for $35k, but like you said "modified: who knows". My vote is for a Mustang Cobra, but that's why I'm asking to see what people who might know more than me think. BTW Cobras hadle really well. They aren't just straight-liners.

[Gets in too bench racer mode]
The New (04 w/ blower) cobra does indeed handle well....for a heavy car. Around a road course, weight is the devil, and effects everything. you can add a ton of power, huge tires and brakes, and go fast around road course of course, but a lighter car with more dedicated design will arguable be more satisfying to drive... I myself prefer a car that needs to be driven , not something that needs to be steered

MHO, YMMV, etc etc

04 Cobra. 12's stock on stock tires with a tool driving.
11's at sea level with ET streets and a DaddyMac behind the wheel. EVO's are nice, but fry stock clutches quickly.

STi's are also nice, but boxer engines make baby jesus cry.

My opinion will stay on the road course as well.

The Cobras IRS is a great addition for the twisties over the old live axle.

I am a Mitsubishi fan through and through (only sports cars I've ever owned) but for 30-35k, Cobra all the way.
Straight line or a road course.

A full bolt on LS1 powered Z28 can be had for cheap in the used car market. Add a heads/cam package and you get an unbeatable value in a car with 400+ rwhp that handles well on a road course.

Again, He said STOCK! and NEW!

Now that is a steal for that Z06. I am a Ford guy so I would still buy a Cobra over it, but that is ALOT of car for the money.

I would buy the Cobra, just because of how cheap it is to get HP out of the 03-04 blown models. Switch out the blower pully and belt, remap the FI and I have seen 425 out of them at the wheels. Horsepower TV on SpikeTV did just that.

But as for the fastest NEW, STOCK, around $35k I would say Either the Evo or STI, just because technically the Cobra isn't new. It's an '04 model.

Now I am waiting to see what SVT has planned for the NEW cobra. I heard they were playing with V-10s. Actually I read an article where SVT dropped a 351ci V-10 (a 4.6 with 2 more cylinders added) into an '04 GT chassis (with solid rear axel). The magazine tested it at a dragstrip and were getting low 11's on street tires and mid 10's on slicks. No one knew how much power it had (I am sure SVT did, but they weren't telling) but all they could do was state the obvious, it was FAST.

Cobra's biggest problem is their high roll center...the IRS only forgives so many sins.

As far as V8 powered stuff? I had an 01 Firehawk with the SLP-optioned Bilstein suspension...THAT was a handling car. I showed a C4 Corvette a thing or two in some twisties in the Shenandoah Valley in VA....

As far as whats out there now? If I were spending my $35k on something for twisties, I'd drop it on an STi, and start tweaking the suspension...just a little. Its pretty dang good off the showroom floor.

The newest issue of road and track has a good comparo.

If it was me, for 35k, I'd look for a gently used '02-04 Z06 Corvette and kick some butt.

35k gets new 400hp GTO I sure a couple of tweaks and will handle will well. Road course is a Drag Strip with a few corners to change direction for next drag. AC Cobras were not great handlers but were hell on the straight away. and finish lines are where? I remember watching the Cobras at Daytona in 60's. Those Red italian cars would pass Cobras on road course When they pulled on to hi bank part AC would pass like they were stopped.

Another vote for the STi or Evo. All those rear axle beasts you describe don't come new under $35K, and nothing in that price range (Beemers included) can touch these cars.

Evo has the nod in handling

STi has the nod in reliability and out of the box power

Thats not a mans car. I tried sitting in one at an auto show and had my nuts crushed while the door rubbed my left leg and the console my right. It looks like a fancy miata made for runts. The Z3 is just a slightly fancier miata than the S2000.
