Here's a question: Are there any rifles being made and sold on the civilian market in the US for the "other" 50, the Soviet 12.7x109mm? Now that 50 BMG is illegal in California maybe someone should "take it up a notch" and go to the Soviet caliber.

From what I've heard, if a .50 BMG can be chambered in it, then it's a no go per the DOJ.
There is the .50 DTC but it's so new that only EDM ARMS is chambering rifles in it. You'll also have to fire form all your own brass from .50 BMG brass. I'm not sure if the SSK Ind. 14.5mm JDJ round could be had here as it's a blown out .50 BMG case. So the same could be said about the Russian round, you could probably chamber a .50 BMG in it but I doubt it would fire. Even if you could get it to fire, the results might not be good.

That's crazy. I've never tried, but I assume that I can chamber 50 BMG in any break-action 12 guage shotgun, right? It might even be possible to chamber it and get it to go boom (a big, not very fun boom). Are 12 guage shotguns now illegal?

I looked at their page on it: http://www.edmarms.com/products/510dtc.htm
It looks like a good idea. It's basically "just like a 50 BMG but legal in California". Oh what a great use of our legislators' time to outlaw the 50 BMG!

I bet if you somehow chambered a 50 BMG in a Russian 50 cal chamber and got it to fire the results could be very very bad. I would not want to be near by.
It would be an interesting court case. The law specifically says "50 BMG". I think the DoJ is not playing with a full deck if they think that this law covers any type of firearm that you could wedge a 50 BMG round into.

I agree 100% with you but I would hate to see someone become a "test" subject in this state. Speaking of being a test subject, one of the guys I know that sells EDM .50's and works with the company almost got busted! He was at the last Glendale gun show selling .50 DTC rifles when he was approached by two undercover DOJ JBT's. They were going to arrest him on the spot, that was until he (former ATF) showed them that a regular .50 BMG cartridge wouldn't fit in a .50 DTC chambered rifle.
