anyone know how i can boost my wifi signal so that i can still use it at work about a mile or mile and half away?

My personal opinion here... it's worth what you have paid for it.

I think you will have trouble pushing a mile with off the shelf stuff. I would look into putting up a dish as each end, just to get the db gain needed to push the signal a mile. You will also need at least a 200mw card at each end. I personally like the EnGenius card for this. I am sure there are other 200mw cards that will work. You will need line of sight or very close to it. Then comes the problem with getting something that will run the 200mw card. This can be done with something small like an embedded board. Then comes the lining up the dishes.

The other piece of hardware that could be used to house the 200mw card would be a Linksys WET11. The card that it uses is a Prism2 chipset and so you can just drop in an EnGenius card. The closer you have the card to the antenna the less signal loss you will get in coax to the antenna. I have seen guys who use so much coax that they would have been just as well off to just run a stock router in the house and get the same effect.

This type of project can be done but be prepared to be in for a bit of work.

In my networking class at college a couple of years ago, a classmate and I built 3 antennas, 2 directional, and 1 omni-directional. We found the designs online somewhere and had some help from a friend in the EE department to help us tune them, which was definately beyond my knowledge and ability.

In our testing, we didn't get anywhere close to a mile, but the cool factor was pretty high when we demo'd the antennas for class.

I have the write up and sources we used if you're interested, just let me know and I can post them somewhere for you.
