Had my AR-7 since around 1980 and it still works just fine at present in trunk of my car. Guess I'll get it out this week end and shoot it.

Could stand it went out to car and got it out. This gun been in my trunk for several years. I put together and let rip empted the mag no trouble. went in house and got some 22 and fired 3 more mags never missed a bear reloaded mag and disassembled and stored in stock and put back in trunk. Works for me. Some day I clean it and lube it.

I've had 2 AR-7's.

Both were very very sensitive on magazines and ammo.

I was never impressed with their ergonomics or accuracy.

Scope mounting was a joke, the scope mount that replaced the side plate had to be re-zeroed every time you removed the scope, but you couldn't disassemble the rifle for cleaning or storage in the stock without removing the sideplate and it's locking screws. I understand the newer ones finally have a 3/8" groove for scope mounting, but you still can't put the rifle in it's stock with the scope on it.

For a take down rifle I'd much rather have a Marlin Papoose or a Browning take down. I have the chinese copy of the Browning and it's a much better rifle than the AR-7 and it cost me half as much.

When I got mine I belive was around $80 new . I carried mine when I was backpacking in those days. Put it togather when I made camp. Also was good for travling carry in suit case and put togather in motel room. Nice in citys that weren't hand gun friendy.

I have owned two ar-7 rifles and 1 ar-7 pistol. All three have been terrific 22's. Equiped with the old ram-line 25 round mags, you could rip thru ammo in huge amounts. However, I found I also got great field accuracy from the rifles. Once, I saw a groundhog run up the side of a hill about 75 yards away. I was tracking him thru the stock peep sight when he stopped and stood up on his hind legs to look at us. I put the front sight on the top of his head and took the shot--That was one surprised groundhog!
One way to judge this rifle-almost every gun buddy Ive had has bought one after shooting mine.

I could never get either of mine to function with the Ramline magazines. Even with their factory mags it was hit or miss, some would work others wouldn't.

Accuracy depends upon your point of perspective. I do remember having a fun afternoon on my brother in laws back deck on summer. He'd had a party a couple of days before and someone had brought a case of cheap beer, it tasted like crap, so we'd shake the cans up, then throw them as far as we could, then pop them with the AR-7 (it was the only gun in my car at the time). It would still jam occasionally, but hitting the beer cans was easy. Still the AR7 isn't in the same league as the bolt action .22's.
