new ham seeks advice.

Wow. After waiting years because of time and work requirements and just because they are hard to find...I've started an 8 week class in Amatuer radio. (Class meets once a week and ends with a test for either General or Technician Class).

I was wondering where you guys buy your equipment? Whats a first good radio?

I've got an old Drake r3 series transmitter and reciver...but not too sure just yet how to make it work.

Used ham gear abounds. Look on eBay. I just sold my old Tentec HF rig...I DO have a GAP vertical antenna available for a local pick-up cash transaction if you happen to be in DFW...
