View Full Version : Walther P5
Thanks for the Walther Forum. Thought I'd take a minute to brag on my P5. I used it last year when taking the Ohio CHL course. I shot the center out of the target. Shot it for the first time this year, last Thursday. I shot the center out of the target. The accuracy and reliability of this pistol is better than me. Walther rocks.

What did it cost you? I'm looking online for a P5 and it usually sells between $6-800. Is that good or bad?
I gave $750 for mine. It was either NIB or very close to it. Its been a few years since I bought it. Factory mags run $40-$50 each. I would think you could find one a little cheaper than mine if you look around. I have noticed that P5 mags on ebay usually go for more than $50. The used P5 on Guns America for $600 looked like a good deal to me. Kramer Leather makes excellent holsters & mag holders for the P5.

I saw one at a gunshow, but didn't think to ask the price. (I only had $50 usable dollars on me)
Neat little guns.

Saw one at the recent Bealton, VA show. They wanted $800 for it. Think I'll stick with my P99.

A friend of mine has one of these. Out of the 3 pistols in this class, the P5, HK P7, and the Sig 225 (P6), I like the P5 the most. Ironically, I own 2 P7's and the Sig 225. The P5 is a beautiful gun. This gun is what I think of when thinking of a German 9mm. It is sleek, elegant, has that very refined to it, is very accurate, and is just really high up on the cool factor. Have to get one of these someday along with an HK P9s.
A friend of mine has one. I've had a grip on the P5 once, and it seems to fit my small hand perfectly. Heard lots of good things on P5. But I wonder if you have to choose between the P5 and P99 which one will you choose and why?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Can you also tell how good is the P99? What if you compare it with the classic SIG P226? Which one do you think is more durable and accurate.
Do they still manufactured SIG P225?
Can you also share your oppinions on the classic model SIG P239 (9mm). What do you think of this gun for it's durability and accuracy? And do you recommend buying P239 for everyday CCW. How about between P228, P229 with the P239, all in 9mm. Thanks a lot.:)

Between the P5 and P99, I personally would take the P5. I can shoot the gun way more accurately that the P99. Also, I understand the new ones have a different trigger guard, but on the older ones there is a ramp in the trigger guard that I would always wind up scraping the tip of my finger against.
Comparing P99 to the classic Sigs. I would take a 226 or a 228 over the P99. I'm not that crazy about the P99's trigger and again the ramp thing in the trigger guard. And yes, the still make the 225. I understand CDNN has a bunch of them for very cheap.
P239.... Great gun for carry. I've only fired the .40 version and surprisingly, the recoil was not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I would think the 9mm would be really nice in this gun. Comparing the 239 to the 228/9, depends if you want a smaller slim gun to hide or if you want a higher capacity gun that is a bit more chunky. The 228 is one of Sigs best handguns. One of my favorites.

I owned the P5 with the European mag release and then had a chance to pick up a P5compact. My brother (Caretaker) asked me if he could carry one for awhile. I gave him the P5 and haven't seen it since.;g
I love the compact with the American Mag release. The P5's are real nice handguns. I also have a P88. The P88 has been called the finest 9mm combat handgun ever made.
I own the Sig P228, P229, P239, Sig P210, H&K P7M8/M13, H&K USP9compact, Glock 19, Browning HP, and my Walthers. They all make absolutely great carry guns and you would be well armed with any of them. When you buy quality they can't argue with your choice.;)
I buy all my guns to carry, and I do carry them all at one time or another.

When the West German police was looking for a new service pistol back in the 1980s, the P5, PSP, and P225 were chosen. In tests the majority of policemen shot best with the P5. The P225 was a goof-up to make it fit the requirements of the politicians.
The only reason that the P5 has been underrated, is the fact that it is not a hi-cap wondernine. It's shootability make up for the smaller capacity. I remember when they were around $400 but that's when I had paid $650 for my Walther P88.
It is a very accurate and desirable gun.
I just saw them in SGN or Gunlist for $459 from the German police. SOG has them. That is a good price if you have a reasonable FFL dealer to work with. The German police never really shot their guns very much.
