Is there any US Navy Carrier apes out here?

I was on the USS Constellation CV-64 from 1986-1989.

USS Nimitz CVN-68 1980-1985
USS Lexington AVT-16 1988-1990
USS Peleliu LHA-5 1990-1993(if you consider it a "Carrier")

I was not a deck ape but nonetheless a "Flattop sailor".

Those were some good times. I was on the Connie for 3 years, did two west pac's then transfered to ADAK AK. I went to radioman A school also in San Diego.

Spent three years of my life there, and enjoyed them all!

As a corpsman, I went to corps school down there at Balboa Hospital. Wasn't the name of that mall Horton Plaza or something like that?

YES YES, that is it....Horton Plaza! I just called a friend of mine in San Dog, and he confirmed this also. Man those were great times...Standing out on the "GRINDER" holding that M-1 Garand that weighed in at 95lbs, sunburned foreheads, and a BM1 that I think did not like polish people! HAHAHAHA

I did two WestPacs ('68 and '69-'70) with VA27 (A7 Corsair II) on the Constellation when it was "CVA 64".

Cool, then we have walked some of the same passage ways then!!! She was the best carrier in the fleet IMHO!! Take Care shipmate!;)

Cruised on the Ticonderoga in VF-53 ("Pukin' Dogs") in '60 & 61.
Constellation in VF-142 ("GhostRiders") in '68 & '69.
Independence in VA-12 ("World Famous Flying Ubangis") in '73, '74, & '75/'76.
A few carquals on Oriskany, Lexington, & JFK at different times.

22 years went by so fast.

Can't remember any bad times unless they were good times. (Vets Know.)

Hey SwampDruid, were you there when one of Heavy 5s RA-5Cs was stripped for corrosion control, with nothin' on it but a coat of zinc chromate, and someone stenciled "MELLOW YELLOW" on it?

05-06-2005, 06:36
To VA27

About the only thing I can recall about the RA5s was 2 of our F4's were supposed to fly escort for an A5 "photo shoot" across most of NVN. The A5 pilot told our F4 guys something to the effect "I'm going in in afterburner and will be over NVN for about 90 seconds. You guys head south feet wet and I'll meet you south of the DMZ." He did just that. He beat our guys to the DMZ. The A5s may not have been too pretty on the flight deck, but stripped slick like they were those babies could FLY FAST.

Oh, yeah, I remember I almost crapped my pants the first time I saw an A5 dump fuel on approach and the dumped fuel lit off. A sight to see. Got to be a commonplace occurrence.

Edited to add.....The A5 took a full load of fuel before starting his run and had to take on fuel after to make it back to the Connie.

Hi All! I wasnt on the "Connie" but my ship the USS Lake Erie CG70 was the Aegis Air Cover for Her Battlegroup along with the USS Chosin, during our WESTPAC in 94-95. I was an Aircrew Rescueman for HSL37 the "Easyriders" which were SH60B (at that time) and a member of R Div (Repair 2 Hose Team Leader!)

My Gosh, we UNREP'ed alot because of Her! Fun times.

05-18-2005, 09:37
The exciting time! Being an AD, I mostly stayed out of the way and took pictures. A guy I went to high school with was aboard with the ship's band. I always thought that was a cool gig, until our first UNREP. As I was wandering around taking pictures I found Johnny...busting down bomb pallets and hauling the bombs down to the magazine! That kinda took all the shine off the band job!

05-18-2005, 17:31
^^ yeah the UNREP isnt to glamourous!! I think i might have ruined more than my share of coveralls with that oil soaked line that the Oiler sent over to us for us to heave around on!!

still very good times. Late nights but fun nevertheless. (looking back and laughing now, of course! :) )
