"Sam Stone" by John Prine is a depressing song about a Vietnam vet who dies from a drug overdose. Why did I mention this song, it just played on my CD rotation.

Also, most anything from the 1960s by Bob Dylan. For example, "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands".

"Little Bessie" by Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.
It's a song about a little girl who's dying in her mothers arms. As her mother cries, she's looking out the window and sees other little children playing in a meadow with Jesus. She wants to leave and be with them, but her mother doesn't want to let her go.
You know what happens at the stroke of midnight- little Bessie goes to sleep...
Having lost a little brother and little sister, I cry every time I hear this beautiful song.

Just Because. Great song. If you've ever loved someone "Just Because", this song will get you.

Have you ever loved someone you knew nothing of,
except you'd seen the light inside their eyes?
Have you ever loved someone just because
nothing felt so easy or so right?

And I think of you like the others do,
wondering if you think of me.
And if you do, if you really do,
who is it that you see?

Have you ever loved,
whether right or wrong?
Have you ever loved someone
just because?

Excuse Me Mr.
(Harper/Plunier)

excuse me mr.
do you have the time
or are you so important
that it stands still for you

excuse me mr.
lend me your ear
or are you not only blind
but do you not hear

excuse me mr.
isn't that your oil in the sea
and the pollution in the air mr.
whose could that be

excuse me mr.
but i'm a mister too
and you're givin' mr. a bad name
mr. like you

so i'm taking the mr.
from out in front of your name
cause it's a mr. like you
that puts the rest of us to shame
it's a mr. like you
that puts the rest of us to shame

and i've seen enough to know
that i've seen too much

excuse me mr.
can't you see the children dying
you say that you can't help them
mr. you're not even trying

excuse me mr.
take a look around
mr. just look up
and you will see it's comin' down

excuse me mr.
but i'm a mister too
and you're givin' mr. a bad name
mr. like you

so i'm taking the mr.
from out in front of your name
cause it's a mr. like you
that puts the rest of us to shame
it's a mr. like you
that puts the rest of us to shame

and i've seen enough to know
that i've seen too much

so mr. when you're rattling
on heaven's gate
let me tell you mr.
by then it is too late

cause mr. when you get there
they don't ask how much you saved
all they'll want to know, mr.
is what you gave

excuse me mr.
but i'm a mister too
and you're givin' mr. a bad name
mr. like you

so i'm taking the mr.
from out in front of your name
cause it's a mr. like you
that puts the rest of us to shame
it's a mr. like you
that puts the rest of us to shame

Roses From My Friends
(Ben Harper)

i could have treated you better
but you couldn't have treated me worse
but it's he who laughs last
is he who cries first

sometimes i feel i know strangers
better than i know my friends
why must a beginning
be the means to an end

the stones from my enemies
these wounds will mend
but i cannot survive
the roses from my friends

when the last word has been spoken
and we've beared witness to the final setting sun
all that shall remain is a token
of what we've said and done

when all we've had has been forsaken
distant church bells no longer ring
that's the sound of a heart taken
and the story of tears from a king

the stones from my enemies
these wounds will mend
but i cannot survive
the roses from my friends

this may be the last time i see you
forgive me for holding you close
this may be the last time that i see you
so of this moment i will make the most

this may be the last time i see you
but if you keep me in your heart
together we shall be eternal
if you believe
we shall never part

the stones from my enemies
these wounds will mend
but i cannot survive
the roses from my friends

Another Lonely Day
(Ben Harper) [LYRICS] | [MAIN MENU]

yes indeed i'm alone again
and here comes emptiness crashing in
it's either love or hate
i can't find in between
cause i've been with witches
and i have been with a queen

it wouldn't have worked out any way
so now it's just another lonely day
further along we just may
but for now it's just another lonely day

wish there was something
i could say or do
i can resist anything
but temptation from you
but i'd rather walk alone
than chase you around
i'd rather fall myself
than let you drag me down

it wouldn't have worked out any way
and now it's just another lonely day
further along we just may
but for now it's just another lonely day

yesterday seems like a life ago
cause the one i love
today i hardly know
you i held so close in my heart oh dear
grow further from me
with every fallen tear

it wouldn't have worked out any way
so now it's just another lonely day
further along we just may
but for now it's just another lonely day

Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings (from the movie platoon when Elias is being chased and shot down by the VC) The Choir (vocal ensemble) version is especially moving also, Probably the single most moving piece ever composed.

Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, For No One, Nowhere Man, She's leaving Home, A Day In The Life - The Beatles

It's Been A While - Staind

There's soooo many........I could go on for a while........

Yes. Agnus Dei, The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Go to www.cdnow.com and do a music search for Barber's Adagio. It's a collection of all the authorized versions (8 total) Three versions are tops for me; 1) Strings of the Boston Symphony Orchestra 2) The Choir of Trinity College 3) Tokyo String Quartet. If that doesn't move you, you can't feel anything. ;)

DEATHROW
05-02-2005, 15:51
The famous Hungarian "Suicide Song" written in 1933 allegedly concerning a lovers suicide.

Sunday is gloomy, my hours are slumberless.
Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless.
Little white flowers will never awaken you,
Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you.
Angels have no thought of ever returning you.
Would they be angry if I thought of joining you?
Gloomy Sunday.

Gloomy is Sunday; with shadows I spend it all.
My heart and I have decided to end it all.
Soon there'll be candles and prayers that are sad, I know.
Death is no dream, for in death I'm caressing you.
With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you.
Gloomy Sunday.

This song was supposed to have been banned from radio because it caused 17 suicides. Pretty depressing thought. It's my favorite.

"C'est La Vie" - Greg Lake.

C'est la vie
Have your leaves all turned to brown
Will you scatter them around you
C'est la vie

Do you love
And then how am I to know
If you dont let your love show for me
C'est la vie

Oh c'est la vie
Oh c'est la vie
Who knows, who cares, for me
C'est la vie

In the night
Do you light a lover's fire
Do the ashes of desire for you remain

Like the sea
There's a love to deep to show
Took a storm before my love
Flowed for you
C'est la vie

Oh c'est la vie
Oh c'est la vie
Who knows, who cares, for me
C'est la vie

Like a song
Out of tune and out of time
All I needed was a rhyme for you
C'est la vie

Do you give
Do you live from day to day
Is there no song I can play for you
C'est la vie

Oh c'est la vie
Oh c'est la vie
Who knows, who cares, for me
C'est la vie

For a while there Barber's Adagio was one of the most popular pieces for D.C. funerals. It was originally part of his string quartet, but proved to be so popular, that it stands alone. It's generally considered that the Adagio is about one of Samuel Barber's "sexual encounters" (of the "Alternative" kind). Once I found that out, it kinda' puts a damper on it. Anyway, the other one that's less popular, but I think more powerful is the "Adagietto" from Mahler's 5th Symphony.

Also,
"45" by Shinedown
"Fire and Rain" James Taylor

"Sometimes you cant make it on your own"- U2- writtne by Bono and sang it for his father at his father's funeral.
"Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own"

Tough, you think you've got the stuff
You're telling me and anyone
You're hard enough

You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
For you tonight

Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

We fight all the time
You and I...that's alright
We're the same soul
I don't need...I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more

Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

I know that we don't talk
I'm sick of it all
Can - you - hear - me - when - I -
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me...

Where are we now?
I've still got to let you know
A house still doesn't make a home
Don't leave me here alone...

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Sometimes you can't make it
The best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

"Perfect Blue Buildings" - Counting Crows
Just down the street from your hotel, baby
I stay at home with my disease
And ain't this position familiar, darling
Well, all monkeys do what they see
Help me stay awake, I'm falling...

Down on Virginia and La Loma
Where I got friends who'll care for me
You got an attitude of everything I ever wanted
I got an attitude of need
Help me stay awake, I'm falling...

Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion
Try to keep myself away from me

It's 4:30 A.M. on a Tuesday
It doesn't get much worse than this
In beds in little rooms in buildings in the middle
of these lives which are completely meaningless
Help me stay awake, I'm falling...

Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion
Try to keep myself away from myself and me

I got bones beneath my skin, and mister...
There's a skeleton in every man's house
Beneath the dust and love and sweat that hangs on everybody
There's a dead man trying to get out
Please help me stay awake, I'm falling...

Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
Gonna get me a little oblivion baby
Try to keep myself away from me

Why it's enough to make you want to chase down a bottle of pain killers with a few shots of Beam.

Jim Carroll / People Who Died lyrics

Teddy sniffing glue he was 12 years old
Fell from the roof on East Two-nine
Cathy was 11 when she pulled the plug
On 26 reds and a bottle of wine
Bobby got leukemia, 14 years old
He looked like 65 when he died
He was a friend of mine
Refrain:
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died
G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten
So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan
Sly in Vietnam took a bullet in the head
Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed
They were two more friends of mine
Two more friends that died / I miss 'em--they died
Repeat Refrain
Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room
Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs
Judy jumped in front of a subway train
Eddie got slit in the jugular vein
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others,
And I salute you brother/ This song is for you my brother
Repeat Refrain
Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof
Tony thought that his rage was just some goof
But Herbie sure gave Tony some *****en proof
Hey, Herbie said, Tony, can you fly?
But Tony couldn't fly . . . Tony died
Repeat Refrain:
Brian got busted on a narco rap
He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers
He said, hey, I know it's dangerous,
but it sure beats Riker's
But the next day he got offed
by the very same bikers

Year to the Day - Van Halen

I woke up to yet another day
Grown to expect, expect more of the same
Except for, for a subtle change
And that is, I'm slowly fading away

Harvest moon, soon will pass
Crop is gone, left only chaff
A bitter pill, and an overcast
A flag unfurled, at half mast
Ahhhhh...

A year to the day
Since you went away
A moment in time
When you were last mine
I'm here standing still
Yeah! With more time to kill
Hey! I barely survived
Yeah, I barely survived

Like pouring salt on an open wound
Memory filling, filling this empty room
I'm as bare, I'm as bare, as a barren womb
Still like the air, in a whitewash tomb
Ahhhhh...

A year to the day
Since you went away
A moment in time
When you were last mine
I'm here standing still
Hey! With more time to kill
I barely survived
Yes, I barely survived

(Guitar Solo)

Ahhhhh...

A year to the day
Since you went away
A moment in time
When you were last mine
I'm here standing still
Been standin' still. With more time to kill
Hey! I barely survived
I barely survived

A year to the day!
Year to the day!
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
A year to the day!
Three sixty-five!
Three sixty-five, five, fiiive!
Ahhhhh...

Honestly, almost any country song will do it for me. The one about the man who buys the dead Vietnam vet's muscle car (what is the title?)..some of George Strait's songs...

And some of Diana Ross' songs are extremely depressing. She recorded some material about growing up poor in an urban ghetto, that stuff rips my heart out.

And Elvis Presley's "In the Ghetto". That one will do me in every time.

Anything where the dog/horse/child dies.. ;1 ;1 ;1
