View Full Version : Please give me your honest opinion on another Kahr/Glock?

I currently CCW a Kahr PM9 DLC which I absolutely love. It's very accurate, lightweight, reliable and carries well in a Milt Sparks OWB and an Alessi Talon Plus IWB clip.
Here's the thing: I'd like another 9mm for more range work and CCW. I'm interested in a G19 as the 15 rounds is a bonus plus this would be ideal for home defense (I have other pistols) and CCW.
I am also looking at a Kahr MK9 Elite 2003. This is a little more weight than the G19 unloaded, fits in my PM9 holsters but is the same capacity as the PM9. It's made of steel so it could take a lot of rounds on the range.
I'll open it up and ask for your thoughts. I'm leaning toward the G19 but am open to suggestions. Thanks!
My vote would be for the G19....great pistol.
The MK9 would have a few advantages; basically the same trigger "feel", you could use the same magazines, and the other things you mentioned.... But;
If you are looking for a pistol to give you some quality range time, the G19 can't be beat. While both pistols are inherently very accurate, the additional slide length of the G19 makes it much easier to shoot accurately than the MK9 (longer sighting plane).
If you are going to use it primarily for target/range use...check out the G19C also (compensated)...No way you could ever wear it out. A real sweetheart....with the compensated model, you can shoot comfortably all day (has very little recoil, and almost no muzzle flip), and if you shoot "hot" ammo through it...the flames shooting out the top will scare the bejesus out of people at the range (especially when it's dark). ;P ;f

Good luck, and have fun..

have you thought about a Steyr M9 or S9? The M9 is comparable to the Glock 19 and the S9 is between the Glock 26 and Glock 19 in size. They hold 14+1 and 12+1 respectively. I actually shoot my S9 better than my larger M9 at the range. It allows me a full 3 fingers on the grip and is perfect for CCW. My Kahr PM9 (bought it last week) will now be my carry piece for the hot summer though.
At 1/2 the price of either Glock, give the Steyr's a look. I can't stand shooting a Glock after owning them because they are so much more ergonomic.
The Glock 19 is a great gun - owned one and a G32 compact as well.
I also mainly CCW with my PM9.
The Glock 26 is going to feel better for CCW but the G19 will work better on the range.
The BHP is also a nice 9mm to consider.
I would get the G19. I have both the pm9 and the G19. The Glock is great from 15 yards and out(and closer as well). I think you get the best of both worlds with the PM9 and the Glock 19. You can still conceal the Glock but it also has a 4 inch barrel plus 15 rounds. I also used to have an MK9 but sold it to buy the Glock. My .02 TJ

I was thinking of the M9 but there's quite a bit of weight difference between this and the G19...approx. seven ounces. That's a lot more weight than I'd like to be carrying. I've tried it before with Sigs (I have a P239 357 Sig) and 1911's (lightweight and full steel) and that's why I'm going lighter, like the PM9 and considering the G19.

True, the Steyrs are slightly heavier, the M9 is 28oz. unloaded and the S9 is 22oz. But they are 1/2 the price and are actually better than Glocks IMO. I carry my S9 all the time and it is in no way too heavy, unless you are comparing it to a PM9.

I was initially comparing the M9 to the G19. Yes, the S9 is closer in weight to the G19 (and the Kahr MK3), and more compact.
You might also want to check out the long-slide 9mm G34. I also carry a Kahr PM9 24/7 but one of my usual range guns is the 9mm long-slide (just wish I could get a 17L sooner than later).
I have both a G19 and a Kahr MK9 2003 Elite. since you already have a Kahr I suggest you go with the Glock. I would also recommend the G19 over the G19C. You don't need a compensator on a 9mm.
I use my Kahr as a pocket pistol in situations where a cannot carry a Glock inside the waist band. While I love the Kahr, I had to choose one pistol to carry, knowing I was going to have to use it, I would take any of my Glocks before the Kahr.
You have an excellent CC gun in the PM9 already (P9 Covert is my personal pref), including the role of pocket-carry. To that I would add the G19. IMO it's basically the 30-06 of Glocks, fulfilling more roles for more people than any other. As long as cover garment permits you can also CC the 19 comfortable for long periods of time (it's certainly no pocket carry). It's a terrific range gun (my daughter-in-law's favorite size), and you can shoot GSSF or IDPA with it quite well... just does alot of things. ^c
Right now my 19 is a house gun that goes to the range every trip, but was my original CC piece. It just sits around & waits for me to tell it what to do next. It's the most instinctively pointing of my Glocks and, out of the box, was inherently the most accurate. The only things ever done to it are changing the sights out, Agrip and routine maintenance. BTW, my G19 has eaten & digested EVERY type of ammo (FMJ or JHP) regardless of mag, mag follower, mag generation, phase of the moon, Hillary's hair-do of the week, with zero malfunctions. It's favorite carry ammo is either +P 124gr Rem Golden Sabres or 147gr Win Ranger-Ts. (In the G19, those Rangers shoot softer than alot of 380's.) ;f
I got a pm9 and g17 . pm9 for ccw g17 for the range and home.
pm9 fits in my pocket and its hard to beat a 17 round glock.(18 with one in the pipe) If and when glock ever makes a small glock like the pm9 i would look at them also.(YES my kahr works fine. And is a good gun.)

Well, ditto everything that WIG19 said, for starters.
I've had a PM9 for a couple of years, and wouldn't worry at all about using it as a range gun.
So far, (1300 rounds) it's not shown itself to be fragile at all.
(I did replace the recoil spring and plunger at 1200 rounds. I think that's a good idea in any pocket pistol.)
I just purchased a G19, because I had one years ago, and since the ban expired, I've wanted another.
It's now my house gun, and will be in the carry rotation this weekend.
It's also a blast at the range.
The PM9 is great when pocket carry is needed, or the covering garment is light. (Or the threat level.)
When I can wear a decent shirt untucked, the G19 should be right at home.
You got your Kahr super sub compact, go for the 19. Great gun. Much the same as my choices but mostly in 40S&W. I can carry a G23 in a Bladetech IWB holster with very little (and not noticable)priniting with an untucked shirt and I'm skinny so though not Kahr size it's easy to conceal with a shirt of thick material untucked. CCW for me Kahr is Summer, G27 or G23 for other seasons.

(G19 and 23 are the same size)

Why not a K9 or a T9 for range use to compliment the PM9?

I thought about 'em but want higher capacity like the G19. As I thought about it, I doubt if I would buy an MK9, same round count as PM9 but in a heavier format. The G19 feels better and maybe, the Steyer M9 which I've been checking out.
