You can of course get a tape measure, lighter, and shears from anywhere. There's also 2" nylon webbing and triglides, but that may be too wide - I don't know. If you're not lucky to have an REI store nearby, shipping is $5.99. RLDS45S 04-25-2005, 17:43 +1 on REI Ace is way too expensive, but if that is all you have access to! Ramennoodlesoup 04-25-2005, 19:15 For what is needed here, Ace wasn't very expensive at all. The problem is they didn't stock anything! All I found (at the second Ace I travelled to - the first one was a bust) was 1" web strapping and the triglides for it. They also had 1" buckles, but I needed the 1.5". I suppose you could make the whole thing out of what they had, but 1" doesn't sound to comfortable. I went to Ace, Wal-Mart, Autozone, and even a hobby shop. :( utah 04-26-2005, 08:42 I put mine together over the weekend. The only thing I would change is the length of the shorter piece of 1.5 webbing, mine won’t say connected. It looks to me that it would only need to be about 2 inches longer. Other than that it’s a great sling for the price. njl 04-26-2005, 15:08 The picture showing attachment is pretty dark and hard to see the details. Does this sort of sling work on a standard A2 AR without collapsible stock or any extra gizmos mounted on the forend? Is that what the short loops at each end are for?...so it can go through the normal sling attachments but still be held from above rather than below? I've never been too sure what to do with the sling on my Bushy...it seems rather non-functional. If you forget about it and try to sit down in backpack carry mode, how bad will you damage the barrel? :) RLDS45S 04-27-2005, 14:06 The only thing the GGG sling things cost about 30 bucks each! So they eat up any savings. I think with some extra webbing and a Specter gear photo you could adapt the basic sling to any gun. The point of attachment becomes the issue for sure. Ramennoodlesoup 04-27-2005, 20:14 Negative on the REI stuff. The web strapping is too thin and slick and the buckles aren't right. I'm going to try to salvage this by trying to sew the strapping to itself where to prevent it from slipping through. Ramennoodlesoup 04-27-2005, 21:10 Threw it all down, and started jumping on top of it all in frustration. Then I slung it into the back of the closet and ordered an IDF Sling from dsgarms.com :) GUNZEALOT 04-28-2005, 11:51 I made the sling and attached it to my AR15. When I let the gun drop and transition to my Glock, the nylon strap chafes the neck. Other then the strap rubbing on the neck when the gun is moved, it feels ok. I don't have the GGG sling things so I just attached the front strap to the front post of the front sight assembly. I don't think this would put any more pressure on the front sight than the sling attachment. Anyone else have the problem with the sling chafeing their neck or did I put it together wrong? triehl27 05-28-2005, 19:00 Well i've got 2 slings completed. A 1.5" single thick web and a 2" tube web one. I am also doing a 3rd 1" one. REI's 1.5" webbing WILL NOT WORK! Go with either 1" or upgrade to 2" 2" only comes in bright red, or royal blue tube webbing. 1" comes in black or od tube webbing. Larger REI's also carry flat 1" webbing in black. My thoughts: I like the 2" for comfort, but the main sling webbing is royal blue. No compications iassembly just patiece to get it together since it's essentially double thickness. The 1.5" is good but the flat webbing lacks the comfort of the tube webbing. Simple assemblly The 1" is tube webbing, and should be done tomorrow morning. Again takes alot of patience because of the tube webbing. I have not "rifle" tested any of these yet But from the feel they are all going to be secure. MATERIALS : REI 2" sling 9' - 2" blue tube webbing (red is also available) 9@ .60ft = 5.40 3'- 1" tube webbing = .96 2 buckles 2@ 1.75= 3.50 1pk 2" slide lock = 1.75 1pk 1" slide lock = 1.00 1.5" sling 9' - 1.5" flat webbing 9@.49ft =4.41 (found at ace) 3' - 1" tube webbing 3'@.32=.96 2pk 1.5" buckles 2@1.50=3.00 1pk 1.5 slidelocks =1.50 1"slidelocks leftover from other sling. 1" sling 9'- 1" od tube webbing =2.88 1pk buckles = 1.25 1pk slidelocks = 1.00 rest of parts were surplus from previous slings. OVERALL feeling of doing this myself? PRICELESS. Mnukedude 06-04-2005, 09:18 This looks like a neat idea I should look into. nutty_one 07-14-2005, 00:39 I saw that tutorial on preban and it inspired me to make a sling for my rifle. Revision 2.0 of my sling works fine, but since I just used what I had on hand from earlier projects, mine was made out of 1 inch wide black strap. Friday (payday) I'm going to build Revision 3.0 of the sling using 2 inch strap (which should spread weight even more evenly, thus being more comfortable) Have heard that 2 inch polypro strap (or plain ol' 2 inch nylon) is more comfortable if you're going to be humping the rifle around for extended periods of time. The only downside to the sling I have right now is that the sling body was made of only 72 inches of strap - which is about a foot or so less than ideal (it's not tight, but it could be a tad bigger for more comfort) The sling in the above tutorial doesn't quite work for my purposes - as I don't have an AR. But it gave me enough knowledge to make a good sling for my G3 clone :) gllgll is a pretty ingenious guy. kestrou 07-14-2005, 08:35 Just saw this thread since nutty_one bumped it - looks pretty interesting and I'm always looking for projects to do. Thanks all! kestrou 919 07-15-2005, 00:33 Tag david30816 12-18-2006, 00:10 REI's webbing does work, you just have to modify it aliitle. The only modification I made was I used a sewing machine and folded over the ends near the slide locks with a little bit of 1 inch sewn in the middle. Doing this made the ends large enough so they would not slip out... works great! It took an extra 5 minutes and still under 8 bucks! The next thing I'm going to make is a mag pouch for my leg that will hold extra AR-15 and Glock 21 mags.
