I am looking to get into an AR type rifle, but i am unsure as to what i should start out with. I have experience with pistols and shotguns, but i dont know where to start with the AR. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
What do you want, full length (20" barrel) carbine (16" barrel), M4 style with collapsible stock? You pretty much get evrything you need velocity wise out of the 16" barrel, and it is handier to use. With the 20" you get a longer sight radius.
Brand wise, you can't go wrong with Bushy, DPMS, Rock River Arms, and a lot of people have good things to say about Olympic Arms. Colt is another good one, but good luck finding one.

I like the look of the M-4 type ARs. What should i be looking to spend to get into one? I went to the bushmaster site and saw some for 1200.00 auctionarms had some for 850+
You can expect to pay anywhere from $799 to about $900. Depends on how prices run in your area.

I belive the 1200 ones are for the carbon uppers. If you stick with aluminum, you should be around 800-900.

I built my M4 AR for about $700 with all Rock River or Bushmaster parts. You could realistically build one for that price if you took your time finding good deals on the AR15.com EE.

for tons of advice and answers to questions that have been asked countless times head to www.ar15.com that being said i'm in the process of ordering and deciding on the parts for my first ar. you can spend around $600 or you can order parts that total above $1000 easily. i'm going the more expensive route...going to take me a little longer to get everything i want but that's the beauty of it, you get exactly what you want and learn a lot in the process.

600? for a used one?
I went to the shop today and they had about 15 bushmasters in the 899 - 999 range.
My two questions now are how important is it to have a removable carry handle, and two, how much does the length of the barrel affect the overall performance of the gun? what is meant by a "longer site radius"?

Sight radius is the distance between the back sight and front sight. Longer sight raduis equals more accurate.
didn't mean you could buy one for $600, well maybe if you're lucky you can find one around that price. you could build one for around that though, like GoreLicks said, if you take your time and hunt around for the good deals they are out there.
How about this listing on the ARFCOM EE?

I am buying the ammo from this guy (meeting him locally tonight). He needs to get rid of his BUSHMASTER rifle and is only looking for $700 + shipping. Its an A3 w/ removable carry handle, too.
The only negative I see is that it looks like it doesn't have a bayonette lug which probably means it was made during the AWB when those evil features were illegal.
