P22 modification

I'm in California. I recently received a letter stating that I needed to send my P22 back to S&W for modification because it has a threaded barrell which violates something or other here. Anyone know what they plan to do when they Californicate my gun?

Unfortunately, they are serious. California has classified older P22's as an "assault weapon" and they have to be returned to S&W for modification so the barrel can't be removed. Walther sells a "CA Approved" version that already has this modification (I actually have one, though I live in Maryland). It works well, except you can't swap barrels or add a supressor.
