So I bought a Mak 90 from a buddy of mine who needed some cash. What's the differnce between a Mak 90 and an AK 47?

MAK-90..... (Modified to comply with 1989 AWB & Imported after the 1989 AWB, Chinese Made, (mostly) Norinco, Stamped Steel Receiver, Semi-Automatic.....but many refer to all post ban AKs as MAK-90's, but there are MAK-91, NHM-91, etc
AK-47......Milled Steel, Select Fire, True "Assault Weapon", 7.62x39mm,....but many refer to all Kalish as...AK-47
AKM.....Stamped steel, Select Fire,
AK-74......5.45x39mm, Stamped steel, Select Fire,
There are other differences, but as I am driving right now...that should cover the basics

Mak90's are the chinese version of the semi-auto post ban rifle. In short they added the funky stock to make them compliant. Fit and finish tends to be better than most of the romanian and wasr rifles of late. If you want more of the real ak look, there us made stock kits you can use. These are supposed to have a certain # of us compliant parts on it to make it legal. Depending on which type receiver you have slash cut or straight cut, ( you can tell once you take off the butt stock) a regular nice laminated romanian stock will fit nicely, if you have a slash cut, it will still fit, but there will be a small gap on the bottom or the receiver to stock. This is only if you don't particularily care about technicalities of us part counts and all of that of course. Or if you find another way to have the appropriate # of parts. Mine looks just fine with the gap. The US stock kits being made are longer for American sized folks. On mine, I don't care about stock fit because it is a bullet hose anyway. Have fun, I would have a MAK 90 anyday over what is available now unless a person went to the high end AK.

Great information. (I'm impressed you did it while driving.)
Thanks for the quick response.

i regrate selling my mak 90.it had a very nice clean breaking trigger.solid as a rock.loved it dont remember what i traded for but thats long gone too.i think it was for a mini 14.;z
Some of the Mak's were made with milled receivers and there are some in .223.
There are some companies that sell stocks for both the straight cut and the angle cut receivers. (Ironwood Designs http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/index.html )
They are the best of the inexpensive AK's.
