I've used stock mags and Metalform (regular follower and round) with no problems.

I use Wilson Combat magazines in all of my 1911's... work great, but you pay the price for them.

The old colt is very picky. I've even tried the Wilson Combat mags in it. I've ended up buying stainless steel colt mag bodies off of Ebay and stuffing CMC guts in them. Works like a charm. The Remington Rand and the Kimber don't mind them either.
If you find a good lot of them you can usually expect to invest about $11 per mag.
I use Metalform, and for .45s, I don't think you can buy a better mag than the FBI spec 7 rounder. I don't feel the need for an 8 rounder based on the concerns/opinions of "serious" users - FBI, Clint Smith, etc.
I also use thier 9 round 9mm in my STI, with 100% reliability.
I believe Metalform makes CMC mag bodies, and I use their 10 round 38 super mags in my 9mm Trojan. Those have worked perfectly... WITH BALL AMMO. They will NOT feed hollow points.
I use USGI surplus mags (the were new in wrapper)in my Rock Island. Picked them up cheap, and feed FMJ and lead SWC reliably. I have not tried it with HP's.

Absolutely. New-in-the-wrapper at gunshows, 2 @ $15. There is a slight difference in the feed lips compared to Colt factory mags.
I've used the GI mags in a '43 RR, a series 80 Colt, and a Springer. No problemo, altho, like 23Mny, I haven't tried hollowpoints; GI ball or RNL.
A buddy that uses big-name mags has feeding troubles. I don't.

I don't have any reason to feed HP's, all I use the 1911 for is shooting at paper targets. I think if you stick to what the pistol was originally designed for, it works without any problems.
WIlsons and CMC here. I recently bought a few Wilsons online from Brownells and got 2 for $44. Not a bad deal, they are great quality. You might be able to pick up CMC for a little less.
