Just purchased a NIB p99 AS with two 15 round mags for 530 at my local gunshop. Seems like a nice piece, unfortunatly I was not able to bring it home because my CCW processing came back "delayed" (anyone else incounter this latly?). Normaly I walk in, buy what I want, then walk out with gun in hand. Oh well, gives me something to look forward to I suppose.
Got a couple of newbie questions however. Are night sites easy to instal myself (limited gunsmithing skills) and what type do you folks recommend? I just ordered an UM kydex belt holster at thegunsource.com but oppted out on the expensive mags for now, I'll wait a bit and hope they come down.

Thanks for now.

Congrats on the purchase! $530 is a great price on an AS model right now. They're getting hard to find and around here, the price is at $600 and climbing. Well done!

As far as sights, they should be pretty easy to install. I've replaced a front sight -- which is simple. The rear sight is probably a little harder, but not overly so.

As far as magazines, you've just discovered one of the prices of Walther ownership. 15 or 16-round mags run around $38. Period. That is down...from the price during the AWB for pre-ban mags that ran $100 or more! MecGar makes the factory mags but they don't have a license to sell them as after-market. I know that ProMag makes some 10-rd mags...not sure about the standard capacity. But personally, I'll only buy factory or MecGar for any of my guns. So if you want more magazines, you're going to have to bite the bullet and fork over the big bucks.

Given how much I love my P99, though, I consider the magazines high cost a small price to pay for such an outstanding pistol!

Thanks navy87guy. yeah from what i'v been reading the AS model may be hard to come by in the near future, perhaps I got lucky for once on a gun purchase. It was kind of an impulse buy however, saw it, had to have it, without much research. My reasoning was now that the AWB had expired I needed a "high cap" something or another. I dont like Glocks, have plenty of .45's and I just dont care for .40 caliber in any firearm any more.
Now if someone could chime in and assure me that +p is OK to use in the P99 I'd consider this an outstanding purchase.

Not at all sure what the year is, since it's still sitting in the shop 30 miles away. I would not be surprized if it's a new model since this guy sells guns quickly. Is there a big difference in the two?

Ah crap......sorry guys. As I stated before this was sort of an impulse buy and did not know much about these firearms. I picked up my Smith and Wesson clone P99 today and was frankly a little disapointed. I for some reason thought it was the same gun Walther made, but upon further research there are subtle differences.
The Walther is a more attractive package with the non-serrated barrel and all. I hav'nt fired it yet, I'm sure it will be a fine piece. Guess I'll head on over to the S&W forum, Thanks all.

To be honest, in reality, it is the same gun w/ just a few cosmetic differences. The Walther version does look cooler, I will admit, but it's close enough to be almost the same gun. In fact, it's more closely related than the Taurus 92/Beretta 92 are.
