View Full Version : Brass punch recomendations
Hello
I hope nobody minds this post here, but since the smith's are probably here it seemed like the best place to post it. I figure I should get a brass punch set so I can play gunsmith. I would like recommendations and hopefully links to good quality punch sets.
Thanks

Dillon used to have a nice set, and Im guessing they still do.

Do you mean a brass drift (for whacking, er, adjusting sights) or do you mean a punch (for pushing out pins, aligning parts, etc)? Usually pin punches are steel, that's why I bring it up. Doesn't really matter, so get yourself to www.midwayusa.com or www.brownells.com. If all you want is a Glock disassembly tool, any of the big Glock parts places have them, try TopGlock, Glockmeister, Lonewolf. I got mine from Rob at the Glock Doctor http://glock-doc.com/index.html, he sells here on GT as Desert_Scorpion.
For every Starrett punch I have, and that's a couple sets, I have (at least) as many that I've made myself. Brass ones especially.
For brass "punches" I usually use bench stock, round or square, and cut it off at about 3". Longer lengths can (and are) used, but usually for alignment purposes.
For really small diameter punches (and I find that 90% of the punches you'll use are less than 3/16") I use drill stock fit into a handle.
I usually put a piece (or two) of masking tape over the face of my drifts to keep them from leaving the telltale brass marks on the gun.
Remember, if you bend a punch, you probably shouldn't be using it.
