View Full Version : Ironic but when did beretta start loading up the 92/96 with plastic parts?

I noticed the Beretta 92/96 models now sport plastic guide rods, plastic safties, plastic sights and plastic slide stops, I think.

When did this occur and can you get at least MIM 92/96?

Or is there a high-end model that is all metal even if MIM?

Or are there sources of after market replacement parts?

I don't mind a platic glock but it seems wrong to have a plastic beretta...

I just about bought one of the new ones with the plastic parts, but then found two nice, hardly fired 92s (1-Bruniton, 1-stainless) with all metal parts. I bought both within a couple of weeks of each other. I think that the changeover has occured in the last year to two, because I still see some with all metal parts in stores that don't move inventory quickly. I don't think there as really any problems with the plastic parts (works good for Glock), but I strongly prefer metal in the Beretta. The metal guide rod alone from Beretta is about $30 to $40 bucks. Check out www.berettaforum.net for more info.

Glock30Fan:

Could you do us a favor, and post a link to the specific thread on Beretta Forum? I looked, but all I found were other threads which referenced a thread with the information (but no link to same).

Here are some threads about plastic parts:

That's the best I can do. There have been a lot more threads about plastic parts then show up in a search for "plastic." I don't think there is anything wrong with the plastic parts, except from a esthetic standpoint.

I got my 92fs Vertec about a year ago. I heard all kinds of horror stories about plastic parts, but the one I got was all metal except the guide rod. I now have a Wilson steel guide rod, and everything else is still stock.

I'm no engineer, but I don't think Beretta could use a plastic slide stop. I don't think it would be strong enough. I could be wrong, but I would bet that at least that part of the story is a rumor.

Why plastic? Beretta cutting back on the amount of steel in their pistols? If the berettas were made out of the same material as glocks, it would probably be much easier to carry a full size 92FS..........

I've had my 96 for about 5 years, I wouldn't buy one of the new ones with all of the plastic parts.

Hey PlasticGuy my dads an engineer and I just asked him for you he said it would depend on how much force you put on it and how long you want to use it, in about 20 years it'll probably fall apart anyway.

My beretta 92F was made in May of 92. It is 13yrs old and has no signs of "falling apart".

I never expected a Glock forum to be a place where we worried about plastic being bad.

That said, I'd like to replace my guide rod with a metal one. The other plastic parts don't so much bother me, but that seems like it'd be a high-stress object.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with the plastic parts. ;Q the slide stop is not plastic either. i think after 500 years, beretta probably has a pretty good idea about how to make a pistol and what parts they can and can't use. i've had metal and plastic in my berettas and it's only an issue with someone who doesn't know any better.
