View Full Version : USB 1.2 or 2.0?
I have a 4-5 year old Dell 8200 and I've been trying to find out which USB I have. I want to get an external HD but I'm sure I need a USB 2.0. Ran a search of the comp. and been on hold with dell forever. Anyone know? Are they pretty easy to upgrade?
I think everything from the 8250 and higher has 2.0. You should be able to find out in device manager (look for the words 2.0 or Enhanced) under Universal Serial Bus...
USB 2.0 is "backward-compatible" with USB 1.0/1.1
Your 2.0 device will work on an older system, only slower.
The Dell Dimension 8200 has only USB 1.1 built-in.You can add a PCI USB 2.0 card to it.Check the PCI slots,if it has one longer than the others,on the 8200 Dell normally put the dial up modem in this slot, you might be able to make use of a Firewire 800 PCI card in that slot. That's about twice as fast as USB 2.0.In a normal, short PCI slot the Firewire 800 card normally only runs at Firewire 400 speed.USB 1.1 is way too slow to do anything serious with an external drive. The USB 2.0 is just barely fast enough but noticeably slower than the internal hard drive.Firewire 800 is about as fast as the internal drive.
You can use USB 1.1 or 1.2 for an external HDD, but it is slooooower. Moving gigs of files from an older system is a "set it and forget it" thing.
If you're going to upgrade, get a firewire (IE1394) connection. Faster by far.
Thanks again. I just keep learning stuff here. I went to Best buy to look at DVD’s and they had the Western digital 120 G on sale for $90. Bought it. I COULD NOT think of “firewire” so I just said FI and got a 2.0 USB connect. Now to see if I can put it all together:)
Never looked at the DVD players.
