i've been kicking around the idea of finding an older model Toyota 4x4 pickup. I'm thinking about the 1st generation Toyotas with a stright axel. Anybody know what year Toyota switched to IRS?

I believe it was about 84, I remember seeing the new ones as a kid and getting all excited.

Toyota went to the IFS in 1986. They redesigned the pickup for 1984, and went to the EFI engine in 1985.

I have owned two Toyota 4x4s and in my opinion stay away from the early model straight axle unless you are ready to spend some money on steering knuckles. The original factory ones were a little on the weak side for serious off roading. My '80 Toy had a 20R engine and GO RHINO axle trusses front and rear and custom grille guard and rear bumper someone set it up on rough country suspension and I never had any real problems with it. Well except for the front drive shaft and the cardan joint they seemed to go out every couple of years. My '91 is pretty much stock except for tires and rims. If you are looking for power and performance go EFI 22R and a solid front axle but stay away from the turbo models from what i've heard.
