Computer newbie needs assistance:

I do firearms instruction for Law Enforcement and Civilians. I would like to have a power point program for the classroom sessions. I need advise as to the best basic set-up.

Laptop advise.

Projector advise.

I don't need anything great. It will be for small classrooms of around 20 students in a small setting.

I would like to stay in the $2000.00 range for both the laptop and projector if possible.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Projectors are expensive. No two ways about it. Make sure you actually need one before buying one, as many academies have one or two available.

You can get away with an older used laptop from ebay for control, if you need to, just make sure the external CRT port is fully functional.

As far as control software goes: if you don't need all the features of MS Powerpoint, consider OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org). OpenOffice 2.0 should be fully out soon. It is a free office suite.

As far as the show itself, make good use of the slide master (the layout rules that apply to all slides) to keep everything consistent. Consistency helps your students to gather information quickly, rather than having to relearn the layout every slide. Also remember that you are teaching, and the slides are only there to reinforce; don't put your entire script into slides, only the main points).

Also, you can get an idea of current prices at http://www.newegg.com.
