View Full Version : Meprolight Rears Too Bright?

I just bought a used Glock 37 that came with Meprolight night sights installed. Both the front and rear sights appear to be almost new (as does the pistol), but I'm disappointed that in low light, the rear dots look brighter than the front dot. It's likely that the brightness is the same and the rears just look brighter because they're closer, but it's still not the sight picture I want. IMHO, the front dot should be at least as visible as the rear dots, if not slightly more so.
Is this typical of Meprolights? I have Trijicons on another pistol and they don't have the same problem.
I do have an old Meprolight rear sight with dimmer dots that I could swap for the current one... if I had a sight pusher tool. :(

Must be a bad or weak set. My Meps display normal with equal lumination from front to back.
meps have been coming from the factory with the rear sights brighter now. Its supposed to be a feature that helps you better line your sights. At least thats what the meps manufacturer says.
mine are essentially the same brightness front and rear. Got 'em 2 weeks ago.

Take a Sharpie marker and blacken over the rear dots. In low light they'll still glow, just less brightly. If you don't like the effect, the marker ink comes right off when wiped with a mild guncleaning solvent.

90% of the time if you had to use your night sights in a lethal force encounter, you'd see a jumbled green glow over the BG's COM as your arms quickly extended outward from your indexed body and the trigger is pulled. Sights are all but ignored in this situation.
The only time I'd be concerned about the brightness/color/configuration of the rear/front is if I wanted to make longer distance shots at night. In that case my pick would be a Novak bar/dot or a Ameriglo Operator green front with yellow rear. The former has the benefit of vertical alignment and a white surrounded bright green dot and a dimmer rear bar, and the latter draws attention to the white outlined, brighter, green front sight. I'd prefer the Operators for clearance drills and price.
My Meps were ordered with the green front, yellow rear combo. Works great for me- during a fast draw & shoot, I see only the green front. If things slow down enough that I want the precise alignment from the rear sight, then the yellow rears become readily visible. But as always, YMMV.
