di ba si eduard naka fuji?

Yes I used to have a fuji sl1 - it was really light but after after changing back to a semi sloping bike I realized compact frame isn't for me. I just swapped out frames around last month - I met with Pio to get the mat during that day. I shall see if I can take a picture of my new steed tom

this is interesting post ka naman ng picture, i have an old roadbike that maybe i can convert

Here they are as requested:

Hybrid (Trek). This is a cross between a road bike and an mtb, but is closer to being an mtb as it has mtb gearing.

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp248/ebel_see/IMG_1714.jpg

Flatbar roadbike (Fuji). This is basically a road bike with an mtb's flat bar. Wheelbase is a bit longer than on a racer, but has road bike gearing with a triple road crankset.

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp248/ebel_see/IMG_1719.jpg

This is my favorite city bike; a chromoly hardtail (Raleigh) that I built up from parts. Very nice for weaving through traffic.

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp248/ebel_see/IMG_1712.jpg

Here are the tires photographed side-by-side for comparison. From Left to Right: 700x23C road tires, 700x35C Cyclocross tires, 26x1.3 mtb slicks.

105 is good to go. Very reliable and precise sa shifting. 105 is the start of the racing line of shimano so durability is there too. I used to have the 9speed. Question lang why the 9spd?? You will be 2 generations down. You might have a hard time finding parts like cogs and BB and shifter (well next to impossible to destroy the shifter/levers unless you crash). I suggest you go na for the 10spd.

For me among the 3 gruppos (SRAM, Shimano, Campy) shimano has the least quirks - parang toyota - it just keeps on going and going.

Oh yeah considered as consumable parts ang cogs, chain and chain ring. Usually if your chain is stretched then your cogs are toast - you have to change both at the same time then your shifting would be back to as new :)

I use Shimano SPD pedals with multi release cleats. Ok naman, just tighten them after you get used to it.

I use cb eggbeater on my ht and spd (exustar pm25) on my fs. Kung masher ka i suggest you get the cb. With cb you'll only unclip pag twist mo ng paa at 15 or 20 degrees.

Medyo mas mahirap kabisaduhin ang cb. If you want, you can start with the combo pedal (i.e. Candy for cb, dx pedals and the like for shimano) para you can still pedal on techy terrain during times na di ka confident na clipped. Hth

Allegra
04-08-2010, 08:24
I use a shimano 545 yata , yung may metal platform para pwede gamitin kahit walang cleats
sa simula , you just have to conscious kung ano gagawin ng paa mo when you need to unclip
Muka lang mahirap , pero the only time you'll fall on your face is kung tumigil ka bigla, makalimutan mo naka clipless ka

Thank's, that was the kind of input I was looking for. The reason behind the inquiry was this: My Fuji came with mostly Tiagra parts that I want to upgrade for better weight and performance.

The options I'm looking at are:

1. Low cost, mid-quality option - Use Shimano 105 9spd (5500 series) triple crankset, BB, FD, and RD. This will run off my existing shifters. I already know where to get the parts (a matched NOS set), and the upgrade will set me back around P8-10k. My original inquiry was meant to confirm if I should still maintain this option. Based on your input, it looks like a small YES to me.

2. Better quality, higher-priced option - Upgrade to 10spd using higher-spec Ultegra 6600 or 6700 series parts. 6600 parts are easier to find locally, while 6700 are still hard to find, specially the triple crankset. To run the 10spd system I will need to change my cogset and shifters also, and shifters are expensive. My estimated cost for this option is P20-23k! :wow:

3. Combination - do option 1 first as it is easier parts and money-wise, then accumulate the 10spd parts slowly (para di bigla ung gastos) and upgrade at a later date. The used 105 parts I can then use to build a beginner road bike for my son, which would be an excuse to start another project. The reasonable price at which I can get the 105 parts is tempting kasi...

Using older-generation parts never bothered me as long as they worked fine. My Raleigh still has its old 24spd (8x3) Shimano XTR (900 series) drivetrain, and so does my XC bike. Ok naman ang performance.

What do you think?

First of all for what use? beater bike or you planning to do some tri or road racing?? If you will not race your 1st and 3rd option is good. One thing you should look into is using compact cranks instead of triple cranks. Lighter and simpler to tune and use. use a 34/50 crank then 23-12 cog would be more than enough for all around riding. For me the best bang for the buck is the ultegra line - medyo bling and light but at the same time price is not that outrageous as the D/A line. I just can't justify spending that much on Dura Ace

Doc Alvin has a good idea too.

No road nor tri racing for me, but I see some long distance touring coming my way. That's why I want to upgrade the bike for better performance and lighter weight.

I know what you mean about compact cranks. In fact my middle chainring (42 teeth) gives me more than enough gears (11-25 cassette) for flat terrain and mild uphill grades. Having said that, I'd still prefer the triple crankset for long/steep climbs, and I even intend to install the Utegra 11-28 cassette when I convert to 10 speed.

Sulit nga ang Ultegra in terms of value. I also can't justify Dura-Ace, specially since my roadbike is a flatbar version. Parang sayang din naman to get the 105 parts as an interim solution if I'll convert to 10sp din naman in the near future.

Isip muna...

Ah ok if it is for touring. I say go for 105 10spd. Funny how some things can be cheaper but stronger but of course heavier - the cogs of the 105 is one of the toughest but the heaviest. The weight difference from one gruppo to another is grams only and I don't think you will notice it. I use the 11-28 too but I have to recommend a 12-27 instead - the gaps are smaller and your legs won't go into shock when shifting from one gear to another. The idea of the 11-28 is for mountain stages when you need the big cogs - (for SRAM it is 19-22-25-28) for the climbs then when you go downhill you can use the 11-12-13 cogs. BUT when you are in the flats you would really love a 1 or 2 tooth jump like 15-16-17-19-21

Are you sure about wanting the cheapest? A friend of mine went that route and if he added the money he has spent fixing/improving his cheap bike to the original purchase price of that bike, he could've gotten a good one na right at the start.

Kung matiyaga ka, there are lots of great bargains in used bikes.

I actually came up with an Option 4 that I might go with, namely to upgrade the crankset, BB, FD, and chain to Ultegra 10sp, and run it with the existing 9sp cassette, RD, and shifters. Info in the net says such a combination will work fine. Then I upgrade the rear as the parts come to hand. I'll have to order some of the parts pa kasi.

I also read some articles about using an mtb RD and cassette for even lower climbing gears. I plan to do an experiment with a SRAM 11-32 9sp mtb cassette that we have lying around. Testingin ko going to Antipolo. I bet it will work with the existing mid-cage RD as long as I avoid cross-chaining, tho I expect the jumps at the higher gear ranges to be a bit abrupt...

We'll see. The only cost of the experiment is the labor for installing the cassette and tuning the rd. I even have a spare (new) chain in my parts box.

If you will be using a 9spd cassette use a 9spd chain first - the 10spd is narrower and might get deformed and you might have to change chains again when you upgrade or sama mo na the cogset na 10spd 105 cogs is really tough, it is made out of steel so heavy but very durable. YUP you can use 9spd RD and FD for a 10spd setup. the 32 might need a long RD. For me I think the 28th is good enough for steep climbs. My bail out is 39x28 and this is what I use for super steep climbs like Sampaloc, Tanay not bad and I get to practice my balance because I run at 7kph at some points - hehehehehe. I just hope I get a chance to use it in Baguio. :)

If you will be using a 9spd cassette use a 9spd chain first - the 10spd is narrower...

Yes, but the wider 9sp chain will rub on the 10sp chainrings and on the 10sp FD cage with only mild cross-chaining. I'd rather risk the cheaper component - i.e. better bust-up a 10sp chain than have a 9sp chain bust-up the new chainrings and FD cage.

The 9sp cassette and the RD should work ok with the 10sp chain as the shifter will control the indexing.

I tried computing the cost of upgrading the bike according to my "wishlist of parts" and the number I arrived at was scary...

If your bike has two bottle cages, then bring two water bottles para may extra ka.

Water bottles sometimes get dirty, specially when riding on wet roads. Yuck!

Oo nga, Ti frames are nice and no longer as expensive as they used to be. Been thinking about a Linskey Ti frame with maybe Dura-Ace parts.

Pangarap muna yon for now... My "toys budget" is allocated na to my pending bike projects and upcoming FA license renewals... I have a few coming due. :phew:

I ride purely for fun but I still find the info very helpful. Kung baga sa kotse yun yung tachometer.

... but I have to recommend a 12-27 instead - the gaps are smaller and your legs won't go into shock when shifting from one gear to another...

I "liberated" a slightly used Shimano 105 (9sp) 12-27 cassette from a friend who didn't need it anymore. I'll have it installed maybe tomorrow.

I hope I don't have to lengthen the chain as I misplaced the spare links.

Actually those orange bikes were brand new Brabus "delivery bikes" donated by the Dutch embassy. We checked them out after the tour; napaka bigat na, single speed pa, at naka coaster brake lang. No wonder one of the Miss Earth riders was pushing her bike up that mild incline from Global City leading to McKinley Drive.

It was actually a very nice day to ride; umambon pa ng konti nung umaga. Reports from Firefly Brigade HQ indicate that the peloton was from 4 - 7 kms long depending on how wide the road was. As sweepers we were the last to leave Tiendesita's and as we left, we heard on our vhf radio that the head of the column was at SM Marikina already WOW!

Next year ulit!

Actually pwede hatawin yung stretch from Tiendesitas to the foot of the Pasig flyover, then you have to slow down a bit so your heart rate will go down in preparation for the incline from the bridge all the way into Ft. Bonifacio.

question guys : normal ba to buy all my stuff in one store (frame, group set, wheel set, etc) then pa buo ko sa mechanic of another store? or babatukan nila ako kasi hindi ko naman binili from them? :)

if ever, magkano kaya charge nila for this service?

Siyempre, you'll want to build goodwill with the bike shop where the mechanic works. It's not always all about savings...

Also make sure that the parts you bring are in perfect condition.

I'm guilty of doing this too. There are times habol mo talaga yung mechanic - then gamble of the shop is you buy some stuff na rin there

Kahit mas mahal , I prefer to buy from the local bikestore, suporta
Kasi pagnagsara sila , wala nang mekaniko
I'll be forced to clean my bike myself
Yuck

ganyan din ako dati, nasiraan ng ulo sa dami ng choices. i found out mas mura pag built na. giant and merida built bikes go for 25k sa lifecycle. pero siyemper kung nag buo, choice ng parts na gusto mo talaga.

Mas mura talaga dito. To give you an idea, just today I got an Ultegra RD for P2k lang, bnew. Sa US, prices for the exact same item is from $80 - $105.

Just yesterday I got Dura Ace bar-end shifters (complete set with cables, etc) for P3.5k. Sa US, the exact same item is $95.

Yup, I decided to upgrade na to 10sp using mostly Ultegra and some Dura-Ace parts.

Let us say I was holding on to dear life - hahahahahaha...... I wanted to do major exposure for our team and do a breakaway for the last lap - eh 45-50kph I just had no more power left to do any crazy stuff. Cramps left thigh & left calf then cramps right thigh ---- Hindi ko na alam kung paano ako hihinto and to get off the bike :)

there was a guy from Tagbilaran - who was soooo groggy - he was telling my team mate - usual top speed in their place is 35-45kph this was the first time they were hitting 50+. Another good part: minimal accidents and minor scrapes and bruises only BUT DAMN madaming malilikot!!!!! ang daming nagfifishtale due to sudden braking :(

Meron ulit akong question. :)

My road bike is setup with a compact crankset (50-34) and 11-25 cassette. Can i change the cassette to an 11-28? Do i need to change anything else for this 11-28 cassette to work? The reason: there is this short steep climb here na kinulang ako ng gears and i have to walk to the top. I don't want to change to a triple crankset setup because it might be more expensive.

Paul, Ok na ok na yung setup mo for climbs. Climbs would never be easy for anyone. As a pro biker said (Was that LeMond) climbing will never be easy it would just get faster but never easier . I have to agree with that. You have to train for it lang - do 2 types of climbs - very light gear 34-25 and spin it - don't forget your up stroke and then do heavy climbs for strength - heavy is very subjective you can start out with 34-23 or 21 and drop a gear when you feel it is getting easy for you :)

BUT! if you want to change to a 28 - you might have to add a link on the chain.
Oh yeah one more thing: what I don't like with ultra light gears is that you might find it easier to spin but it would take longer thus prolonging your agony :)

I just replaced my 12-25 cassette with a 12-27. It was a straight swap and did not even require an extra link on the chain.

Going to a triple would definitely be more expensive. Aside from the crankset, you'll need a triple-compatible FD, as well as a medium cage RD. You also have to make sure that your front shifter is triple-compatible.

How short is the "short steep climb"? Can't you just shift to a higher gear and stand on the pedals to barrel your way up?

I already ordered the cassette together with all the tools needed to install it.

The short steep climb is about 100meters, i tried to pedal standing up pero maling timing or maling gear siguro which took me off balance. When I stand sa climbs , I dont push down , I pull up w/ my other leg
Lessens the force needed to push down and I dont get off balanced

hehehehehe. If you climb that hill often try noting down your speed, effort and time in climbing that hill (while using the same gear). when you notice an increase in performance try with different gears - just remember light gear is aerobic, heavy is anaerobic - to get that muscle and strength for your legs. Bring your bike home para we can do a welcome ride for you :)

ahhhh.... hmmmm teka teka... very irresponsible of me. I will let you do Antipolo muna then taktak - slowly tayo palayo ng palayo. You might go in shock, curse me and then shoot me - hahahaha  if we do a long trip. Want to try it on Friday? I can pass for you Petron corner of ortigas and santolan. We just do one climb antipolo then home na. That would be a good 30-40kms with a sweet climb. Please don't forget to bring hand pump, extra inner tube, tire levers :) I can pass for you 6:15 then be done by 7:45-8am

Thanks Ed, BK. :)

I already ordered the cassette together with all the tools needed to install it.

The short steep climb is about 100meters, i tried to pedal standing up pero maling timing or maling gear siguro which took me off balance. I would try and try it again and just mark my progress on the side of the road kung hanggang saan ako umabot. Kapag mountain bike kasi i could get up, just spinning the lowest on the granny gear.

You need to shift to a higher (harder) gear if you intend to stand on the pedals para may resistance.

A LOT easier  but lets make sure you are at home with your bike before going the distance :)

sige, game!

akala ko kasi roadie would be harder due to the lighter gears ng MTB.

Sige, i will try to record those info. Sige pagbisita ko ride tayo road or offroad. :)

what is a ramped chainring?

Some or i think most chainrings now have ramps to guide the chain while shifting from the small to the big ring.

You need to shift to a higher (harder) gear if you intend to stand on the pedals para may resistance.

I try to spin first at the start of the climb, do i shift 1 gear or 2 gears up before i stand?

Two gears up is usually the case, but you also have to consider the grade of the slope. Experience will tell you what works.

Yes!!! experience would dictate. Kaya trial and error - what is best for you.

Just remember Paul - ATTACK ATTACK ng climbs ;D

The power of your attack will depend on the means at your disposal and the strength of your will. Do not underestimate the latter.

Ang sarap ng feeling when you finally reach the highest point after a long climb, and you see the road slope down ahead of you. You can almost always feel the point where the bike starts to point down.

If you have the new triple chainring, the granny is unramped (both sides are flat). The mid and bigrings are ramped, their sides are uneven and may riveted (ata)attachment that hooks and guide the chain when shifting gears.

i was thinking of using BMX chain on my chainring for my single speed but according to raven no can do i need a dedicated un ramped chainring it i want to use bmx chain.

I wan to use a half link instead of tensioner the only available half links are for BMX chains only
