I am looking at the Walther P22 - I know I am asking the Pastor to tell me whether to pick Satan or God - but is this the .22 to get? I need some honest input - good and bad! Thank you!

Mine rocks. over 2.5k rounds thru it with one FTE. Fun with the laser, too.

If you are looking for a plinking gun, the P22 is just that. It is definately not a tack driver, but very fun as a plinker. I have close to 2000 rounds through mine with only a few FTFs in the beginning. I think it just needed to be broken in. Now it is reliable - I shoot Remington Golden Bullets bulk pack.

I like mine. It's fun to shoot. I just put the laser on it and that should add to the fun. Be sure to use Stingers or better.

My P22 project is still on hold!!

I very much wanted to get one to complement my P99!!
However, it seems there are far to many bugs that have to be worked out of the design!!

My days of beta testing guns are over!!! ;)

I love mine out of the box shoots great. no malfunctions.
BUT... hard for me to take down and clean (guess Im too old to be able to put the spring back in)
Ordered the laser sight.... that should be fun.
Next would be the class 3 lic. for the extra goodies...
Damn.... I think Im going to be a 22 nut....

There is a trick to the spring:

You push the spring rod (with the spring installed of cause) through the hole in the slide, so that you can hold it with two fingers.
Then you install the silde back and once it is half on, you can release the spring rod right into place!

Mine works great...........it hits exactly what I'm aiming at, have had no problems, just got the little laser for it........see how much fun I can have now. The girls and kid I've trained with it just love it as it light weight and easy to use. For a little over $200.00 who can complain.

If you buy one (P22) keep in mind that you can't use "cheap" 22 ammo with this gun.

These little guns are 100% reliable with Mini-Mags or better ammo, it loves stingers....

Cheap 22 ammo usually doesn't have enough poop to completely cycle the slide...

Keep in mind that a lot of decent 22 autos will have trouble cycling cheap 22 ammo, My Ruger Mark II is fussy also.. the little Walther is just more "fervent in it protestation" of cheap ammo... In the greater scheme of things, that is a massive slide for a little 22 round to move.

Mini Mags are about $4 per 100..

My wife loves her P22....

I believed that too, until I decided to pick up a "cheap" brick of Federal. It was labeled high velocity and cost just a little more than ten bucks for 550. My p22 is pretty well broken in (+2,500 rounds) and i've only used minimags/velociters/stingers with no problems. Anyway, I shot the entire 550 without one glitch. I think I'll stick with the cheap stuff now.

I've been using the Federal 500rd box for $6. I haven't seen anything cheaper (locally) and it shoots reliably.

Thumbs up for the P22.

I purchased a p22 for my wife 2 months ago with the walther laser and 5" barrel. I also got 4 fingertip mags for her and a fobus holster. she loves it and shoots it great. I shot a friends with a suppressor and wow that was cool so I got one for my wife. the wife shoots federal bulk hollow-points from Wal-Mart for 550 is $6.50 so cheap and they work. no problems but the occasionally forget to turn off the safety and trying to fire the gun (oops she has done that once or twice. when fireing the suppressor on my friends and thought that was the quietest .22 I ever heard and no recoil, hee hee safety on). I like the gun so much I am getting rid of my ruger 22/45 to get another p22 if I can convince the wife the guns are breeding in the safe and the new p22 is a baby one from her p22 and the p99.

How many rounds do you have through it? Mine wouldn't cycle very well on the cheap stuff until it was broken in. Try leaving the slide back for a couple weeks. That has seemed to help a lot of people with cycling issues. I shoot Remington Golden Bullets. They are really cheap at wally world.

You should be okay as long as you have a newer P22 w/ newer mags, and break it in (at least, possibly stick with) "good" ammo. I've never had any problems with CCI Mini-Mags and just stick to them.

I shot a friends P22 a few months ago, and I just picked up my own. To be honest I got it mainly to have a .22 in the collection and to use as a trainer to teach the nephew and niece to shoot.

A target pistol it is not. But it small and fun to shoot. If you looking for a small .22 that can be fun to shoot the P22 works. If you want target pistol accuracy, I hear good things of the Browning Buckmark.

It is also a good looking little pistol.

I bought both a P22 and a Ruger 22/45 6" Bull on the same day almost a year ago. I can tell you that the P22 has gone through 5 boxes of Remington GB bulk packs with 1 FTF. While it is a fun gun to shoot, everyone else is correct in the fact that it is strictly a plinker. The 22/45 with the stock sights kills it in accuracy, but the Walther is more fun to shoot IMO.

what about accuracy of 3" vs 5" barelled p22's?

or vs a sig mosquito for that matter?

Glockman67
07-15-2005, 23:12
Bill Battles did a mini-review on the Sig and claimed 1.75 inches at 25yds. He also stated that the Mosquito sported a 3.98 inch barrel. Construction of the gun is eerily similar to the Walther P22.

As for the P22, stay away from the Wildcats. It'll lead up the barrel really quick!

I have two and have fired several thousand rounds through each. They both eat whatever brand of ammo that I feed them. The only real problem that I have had is that after a few k they both had a FTF when in DA mode. Seems the hammer would fall on the safety block. Walther America said that was a common problem for some and no big deal to fix. I sent them off, they sent them back and good to go. Even with the hassle of shipping them out Walther America/Smith & Wesson have excellent customer service. No regrets no complaints and I really like these shooters. Funny, my two P22's must have got together because now I have two P99's too.;f

I bought a P22 as a plinker last winter. I really like it. As the previous posts have mentioned, you can't use cheap ammo in it. I use Winchester X High Velocity that I buy by the brick. That is what Smith & Wesson uses at the factory for testing when they repair them.

If you are interested in the P22, check out the Walther forum at www.rimfirecentral.com and view the threads. There are many P22 experts who will gladly answer any questions and help you solve problems.

Keep in mind it is a fun plinker, not a highly accurate target pistol.

I joined this Glock forum to do research on a possible Glock purchase for a carry gun. I am surprised to find a Walther section. :)

I did not like my P22 -- it was not consistently accurate and did not shoot to the point of aim and did not have adjustable sights (for elevation). Rather -- none of the various front sights that came with the gun were correct. I did like that it was light and with an adapter allowed a suppressor to be attached. In the end, I traded it and have replaced it with another light gun -- a Pac Lite. This one with the suppressor and magazine weighs only 24 oz, the sights are adjustable, and it is accurate.

I have a P22, in fact I have an older P22. It is of 2001 vintage, and I bought it used. I really like the gun; it was also my first pistol. Out of the 10k rounds I have through the gun, there have been maybe about 10 failures to extract. It also had the occasional failure to fire, but it was more of an ammo problem than a gun issue. I ever have the older magazines without the A suffix and haven't had issues. The only problem I have is that the rear sight is loose and it moves about on its own.
