I am curious to know if any of you have found a reliable and solid way to mount a surefire or streamlight to your AK rifle. Maybe to the gas tube or barrel but so that it can be activated by your thumb when holding the gun.
Best if it does not involve an expensive mount or a lot of jury jigging.
Duct Tape.
I am not joking.

Can you tell me how and where specifically you mounted your light?
I was looking for the picture, but I guess it is no longer online. I got the idea from the Baltic Eagles "ARAS"...Lithuanians Special Forces Units. They were under-budget in the beginning and had to kinda scrape together their tactical gear. They have MP-5's, AUG's and such, but they had the lights affixed to the front handguards with black duct tape....Did the job. Not pretty, but whatever works, right?

I have had limited success with hose clamps.

Go to Wally World and get yourself some scope mounts.(picattiny or weaver)
Put it on the handgaurd wherever you can mount it.
Install light.
I haven't did this to mine yet, but plan to.
Ps. You can get mounts for about ten bucks.

GIs have used duct tapes to mount flashlights on their rifles before the availability of multiple mounts.

Have not done this to my AK cause i have an AR that has the tactical stuff on it.
By a short AR-15 handguard mount rail ($10 most places), attatch it to the wood hanguard (which includes drilling in this case) then attatch your streamlight. I bought a First SAMCO light mount ($20) inserted my $30 Surefire G2 and bam!!! I have light............
A weaver style scope base should work also. I've seen people use 30mm scope rings to hold there light also......Here's a pic of my AR FWIW.....

This might give you a good idea.
Your stock must be very heavy to balance the gun like that.;c ;c
I use the 'Znich' tactical light made specifically for the AK-74. The mount is incredibly solid, the light uses 'AA' batteries (runtime is over 2hrs w/NiMH rechargeables) and replacement bulbs are only about $4. Bright enough to engage undifferentiated targets at 100yds.
